Hello all. Just picked this rifle up last week. All matching numbers except for the stock and stock hardware. Lgs owner suspects it was a bring back that was sporterized and then restored to it's original form. This is my first K98k. Any input is appreciated. Uploading a few pics still figuring the forum out. Thanks for looking!

Nice Mauser Oberndorf rifle! I’d say the gun store owner was about right in his assumption. Looking forward to seeing some other pics!

I have a perfect mid-1943 Oberndorf walnut stock for that, though it's just fine as-is.

Good eye guys, I overlooked the bolt myself. Yes, font is too small for a byf and the K is incorrect. The shroud looks filed down too and restamped. Here is an example of a K block from the byf 44 posted in the reference forum. It’s a different year, but it should look similar.

Yes ..leg intersects with 45 degree arm on correct ones....not vertical post.

I have a similar rifle. All matching byf 43 barreled action with stock from a second rifle and bands from a third. Still the overall feel is that it's a nice gun. If time allows I'll post pictures. Will be curious if anyone can ID the stock.

thanks for input

Luckily I bought the rifle as a shooter. I'm posting a pic of the safety toggle which appears to be stamped over unless whoever stamped it was hungover. Also had to apply small amount of weld to cocking piece due to wear. If you pulled the trigger while on safe and toggled it fire, it released the firing pin. This is now resolved after the weld/filing to proper size.

I do see that. On my receiver it has the proper K and the bolt is obviously different. Also all the 3's stamped on the bolt have a hanging tail on top edge whereas receiver does not. Interesting.

more bolt markings

Upon closer inspection there appears to be an x and a 4 stamped under the bolt handle with waffenamt 140. Hard to make out. Also an x on topside just where the bolt handle meets the bolt body. Perhaps this could shed light on original make of bolt.

WaA 140 was manufactured by FN in Belgium, which supplied bolts to Mauser Oberndorf. So, your bolt is still probably a byf bolt. I'm unsure of the x markings... I've seen bolts with various markings in these areas and assume they are done in the manufacture process; inspection, QA, etc. Maybe someone else might now what they actually are.

As far as your bolt being renumbered, I believe it was a byf bolt, just from a different rifle, renumbered to yours. You can see in the red circled area the jagged line where the bolt dips down. Probably caused by grinding. This is usually a straight line. Is there an MI on the rear locking lug?

Yes there appears to be an MI not directly on the rear lug but right behind it on bolt body.
