Guys,

I have put together this little table to help me better understand who made what, when, regarding K98k snipers. Please bear with me, I’m no expert on snipers, but am trying to learn. So, while I know there are always exceptions, and that knowledge gaps may exist, etc, am I at least close? Note: I’ve had this for awhile, and from a variety of sources, so it’s kind of a compilation of sources. I can not claim to have done it without help from elsewhere.

1. Short Side Rail (SSR)

Gewehr 98 SS Reworks 1938-1940 SSR Type 1
J.P Sauer 1941-1942 SSR Type 2
J.P Sauer 1943 SSR Type 3
Mauser Oberndorf 1943 SSR Type 3

2. Turret Mount System

Mauser Oberndorf 1939-1943 Low Turret (ceased at k-block 1943)
Mauser Oberndorf 1943-1945 High Turret (k-block only)
J.P Sauer 1944 High Turret

3. Long Side Rail (LSR)

Gustloff Werke 1944-1945 LSR

4. Claw Mount System

Steyr Diamler-Puch, AG 1943-1944 Single Claw
Steyr Diamler-Puch, AG 1943-1944 SS Double claw
Gustloff Werke 1943-1945 SS Double claw
Mauser Oberndorf 1943-1945 SS Double Claw
Gustloff Werke 1943-1945 SS Objective Mount (aka Suhler Claw)
Mauser Oberndorf 1943-1945 SS Objective Mount (aka Suhler Claw)
BSW 1937-1939 SS Objective Mount (aka Suhler Claw)

I fixed your errors above. This is a simple table, it’s more complicated in SS double claw and objective mount, both are SS rifles. The army also assembled objective mount rifles. Sauer never built type3 ssr rifles, that is a depot repair.

You had a better grasp than most for sure. It takes a lot of study to understand all of this. Matt’s website is pretty good, I don’t have the address off hand.

MrFarb's correction is dead on. On my website I created a table showing years, manufacturers and mounting types. It's on my home page here:

Yes,

I had just found your site, it was linked from Snipercollection.com. Your site is awesome! I’m reading and stuffing knowledge into my brain. Thank you for such information, particularly the beautiful photos.

My pleasure and glad you enjoy it. It was made possible by the help of many here.

We'll need to discuss what we call Type III - SSR is highly complicated. Not only because they were made "in factory" in various ways, but also because they were often "updated" (both in production as well as in arsenals) and used such a great variety of scopes.

PS: Just a small side note, it is Daimler not Diamler.

Sniper

No Dave, it is a non sniper, looking to make one, would the early HWZ mount be correct for this year,
or are these fitted to later rifles.

IMHO I do not think it makes a difference whether you use an HWZ or Weihrauch/HWZ Proofed Mount or even an UnMarked Mount Your putting together a Representative/Repro SSR Sniper Best Regards .
