Default Help me identify this rifle

The story on this gun is that my great grandfather brought it home from his tour in Europe near the end of the war. It is cleary meant to emulate a mauser in function, but is single shot, and chambered in .22 lr
The only markings present are the Steyr marking on the receiver, and a possible serial number, both attached. It throws me, because it has a full handguard, more like many export model mauser rifles than a German gun, and I understand Steyr being Austria. Hours of google searching have yielded me none that look just like this one. Does anybody know what this is?

I forget the exact model designation but it’s based on the G12/34 or G29o as many call it, not the k98k. Here’s a similar Steyr and I believe Georg has another identical to yours. There is also a brochure with one on the cover in this thread:

Super jealous, congrats on an awesome rifle! Hermann Historica also sold one of these a couple years back too.

    Fly,
Thank you very much for the link and the information. That makes much more sense to me, now I am curious as to whether these were sold as military trainers, or on the commercial market, or both. I would love to hear from the board member who owns one, or any more information about this rifle. I don't worry of it leaving as long as my grandfather is with us, he won't let go of it. Any way it goes, I have gotten the opportunity to shoot it a few times, which was a neat experience in it's own right. Seems to be a very well built piece.
