S/147 1936, No "Mod. 98" Matching

A recent addition. This one does not the the "Mod. 98" on the receiver. Matching except the stacking/cleaning rod, band spring. It appears the stock may have been lightly cleaned and some light sanding to remove possible dried cosmolene. Comments always welcome.

You hardly ever see a Sauer rifle with markings this crips what gets nearly impossible with these early rifles. Great piece, thank you for sharing it!

Looks very nice raven! Markings on stock stand out quite well. Sure like those pre-war rifles. Thanks for sharing a nice find.

Very nice rifle. You could make that stock look a lot better, it's in good shape even cleaned. What I would do, heat it up with a hair dryer to kinda warm the oil/cosmoline still in the stock and bring it to the top, then polish it with a cotton rag. Don't add anything to it, but just buff it up basically. You could probably do that without the hair dryer, I just thought it might make it go faster. Don't get it blistering hot or anything.

It seems to be a rifle sold in 2012, - these are far better pictures, but between 2012 and 2019 it had some work done on the stock to bring out the markings.

Here are a few for comparison. About 30 in all.

Something odd in the comparisons of the stock, later I will add more pictures and see if this is the same stock or rifle. By maker-date-serial it seems the same, but the stock has different groups of dings and appearance, which can't be accounted for by staining. Chips around the takedown, the dark streak on the buttstock...

That is what I call a high end fraud concerning the outside number - the inside number is clearly bad. The 2 stocks are not the same from different times. Please, I hope this didn’t come from an online dealer, hopefully you can undo this trade deal.

It looks like the takedown disc was either swapped or removed from the current stock at some point too, that’s not a late split tube is it? Real shame here, I hope you can make it right.

It would be interesting to see the buttplate mating to the stock, they rarely can be swapped without being noticeable.

Unfortunately, it is the same metal rifle, and definitely a different wooden stock. What a shame.

The person that traded it seems to be a good fella. I will contact him about a reversal.

Thanks, Frank

Indeed. Not a dealer, but a forum member trade. I hope we can get it straight.

Thanks

Something is strange here, I didn't have time to do a critical comparison, but I am away from my desktops and it has the trends and database on it. As soon as I can I will post all the auction pictures from 2012 (no text of the auction was saved); it was on Gunbroker in 2019 also, I have those pictures also, it appears between those two sales (2012 & 2019)the stock became clearer and darker.

Tomorrow I will get the two auctions posted and maybe someone can figure how this came about.

Another thing is strange, maybe it's just the lighting. Please compare the area around the serial number.

Good News.

This trade was between me and another forum member. Our communication, before and after, this transaction has been extremely good. We have resolved the matter to satisfy both of us.

Despite the problem, it has been a pleasure getting to meet someone new. This experience, albeit disappointing, has exemplified the spirit of the collecting community and this forum.

Should you ever find yourself in a similar situation, I hope it is as amicable as this one.

Thanks to all.
