This is my first post here. I have a friend who runs a pawn shop. He called last week to tell me had just taken in a German 8mm Mauser, and wanted to know if I was interested. I knew very little about K98's, but I always wanted a real deal 1940's German 98. So here it is, missing the top handguard. Bolt, barrel and sight numbers match. The bolt shroud has a different number on it and is a different color. Can you guys peruse my pics and tell me if this was a good deal? He wanted $350, and I was pretty sure I couldn't lose at that price. The bore is actually in mint condition, shiney and sharp. I don't know the story behind the seller or where he got it. Any insight or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Not supposed to be a bayonet lug. It's full kriegsmodel. Killer deal at 350!
Active rust on the buttplate?

The butt plate is kinda rough, I was tempted to steel wool it with oil, but I figured it would be better un-molested. I wiped down the whole rile with some balistal, there were literally cobb webs on it and in it.

I wouldn't have touched it. Especially the stock.
Any possibility of clear pictures of the bolt?

Not steel wool. Oil (Ballistol will work) with a cloth or worst case a penny or bronze wool. You can abate that rust with those steps. Other than that what's shown looks like a legit s block. More/better pics will tell us more but at 3 fitty you did good.

I'll double down. Kroil if you can find it does wonders on rust. Literally on a clean cotton cloth it will turn orange from the rust you remove just rubbing it with said cloth soaked in Kroil. Seriously.

All I have is my cell phone for the bolt pics, here they are, I know they suck with the flash and all, but without the flash they were dark and blurry.

So it looks like it's 'all matching' s block Steyr save the shroud, cocking piece and firing pin. Those all look late Steyr as well from what I see. I can't make out the shroud numbers but do they end in 71 perhaps? If that's the case I can see a scenario how this could have come to happen.

It looks like the shroud # is 9371 (see pic) it's really a bad stamp but pretty sure it is 9371. What do you think?

Agreed. So the whole back half of the bolt is from a different late war Steyr rifle. I'll hold on further comment at the moment since I'm in no way the expert but we've discussed how this 'could'' have happened it a legit way. I'll wait to see if anyone else plays into this.
