JPS 1917 Gew98

Warrior1354

ax - hole
Did not win this rifle off gunbroker but it is a scarce rifle being the high letter block range for JPS in 1917. Getting close to the end of production for Sauer. Even though it's a scarce rifle looks like two bidders got quite crazy. For one the rifle is not matching. The bolt is mismatched as well as the stock. The stock having a unit marked disk is a dead give away for a rifle this late. The final selling price of almost $1700 is alot of money for a rifle with this many problems. But at least we have the data. My guess this was a restoration. If the stock and bolt were replaced by a depot they would have matched the two components to this Gew 98.

Such a ridiculous price. $500 would have been my Max, and only because it had some cool stuff going on with it.

Proof positive that fools and their money are soon parted on GunBroker...

Yeah, I'm always on the lookout for 1917 dated rifles but when this one took off and given all the issues it had, I just sit back and watched! Haha! I thought some of the bidders seemed a little suspect anyways.

It is an absurdity for sure, while really nice and original Suhl makers are elusive and worth overpaying when everything is going right with the rifle, this rifle is 300% overvalued.. usually, when you see this level of stupidity it is with rc's...

I got my salty bolt m/m VCS1917 for $180. And I would not have spent one single cent more.

That rifle was a bargain at that price, a little ugliness along with originality is far preferable to mismatched stocks and grossly inflated prices. Though, assuming the subject rifle honestly reached this price, it certainly is no fault of the seller. Sometimes you just get lucky at auction, never happened to this degree for me, but I have gotten near double a rifles (perceived) value before.

As the beneficiary of some crazy auction prices, I never fault the seller if it was listed honestly. You just have to question the sanity of buyers. Have I ever overpaid? Sure, but never 3-4x what something is worth. Lol

Some rifles are worth overpaying, at least marginally, - 300% is rarely sensible, but the right rifle I can see a strong premium being worth it. This is far more true with Imperial rifles than Republican or NS era rifles, Imperials are (generally) genuinely elusive in upper grades, in many cases a prospective purchase could be literally your only shot at a top of the line maker-date. This is rarely true of 98k's, even rifles of exceptional condition and relative rarity. Very few 98k maker-dates are true rarities whereas Imperials are full of once of a lifetime opportunities.

Just these two rifles, or bolt-stock mismatchers in general, aren't such cases... Republican era rifles often have the rarity, but the demand is just not present (and it isn't likely it ever will be present). Training and developing a world-class army isn't as sexy as seeing it in action and most people are pretty much driven by drama than content (character)
