Canteen authenticity and thoughts

Hey guys, I’m not totally familiar with German canteens, so I’d like your thoughts on this one as far as authenticity, condition etc. Anything special about it? Positives, negatives? Thanks!

It's authentic, and good condition. The leather parts on canteens are often broken or hopelessly dried out.

Matching cup is a big plus.

Yep, good to go and the cup and canteen are properly maker matching. On the cover, carefully unsnap it (so you don’t pull any snaps out of the fabric) and there will likely be the maker ink stamped on the inside.

Thanks Hambone, I’m check that out once it comes in the mail

The canteen came in the mail today. I'm very happy with it! I unsnapped the cover to check for a maker mark, but the cover is pretty stiff. I dont want to peel it away from the canteen too much. However, on the seam the snaps are sewn into, I can see an ink stamp. It looks lile it might start with an S, but it's hard to tell. There's also a name written on part of the strap. I cant make it out, but it's a pretty cool detail.

Hi,

This is a great canteen and for $100 you did well.

This post is well timed as I have a bit of news regarding these canteens.

At the Show of Shows this year I met a dealer in Eastern Europe who informed me a large stock of these pre-war canteens are hitting the market. They're all originals and from the photos he showed me of them they are all in superb matching condition. The hoard was found in Spain, and they were originally supplied to Spain for the civil war but were not issued and stockpiled until now, sort of like the Port K98k's and the pre-war cleaning kits that were supplied to other nations and simply not used and eventually sold as surplus.

What this means is that we will likely all have the chance to buy a few nice minty pre-war German canteens as they start to trickle their way onto dealer sites world wide.

I'm hoping to offer some myself but sadly nobody has approached me yet with any sort of wholesale offer on them, it's likely most will be sold on the European dealer sites although I'd love to stock some also but I don't currently have the connections to get them.

Hope this info is useful for other forum members.

Regards,
Steve

Very cool Steve! I’m sure there are canteen-specific collectors that are excited to hear this news. There are so many manufacturers of these that collectors will have a field day.
