42 code 1939 front sight

I am looking at a 42 code 1939 and the front sight is grooved for a hood. Is that too early for that feature or was this becoming a thing before 1940-41? Thanks in advance.

It very well could have gone to an armorer at some point in its service history for repairs where this could have been done. Post some pictures with other parts and that will help determine if anything else was swapped out, replaced, etc.

You are correct that 1939 would be too early for a sight hood as the rifle was manufactured. Many rifles that went in for repair after the introduction of the sight hood had the front sight base grooved at that time.
Does you rifle have a 0.2 mark indicating a rebarrel?

(did not intend to duplicate BadAim's post, I guess we were typing at the same time)

These are the only pics I have. I don’t own it and I am trying to find out more info before making an offer. Also waiting for seller to reply so I can ask more about it. Supposedly it’s an all numbers matching except the bolt. That’s about all I know.
Picture #2 is the only one I can see anything on the barrel shoulder. Maybe a 0?
Also I don’t see suffix “d” under the barrel serial number. Could that mean a re barrel?

Some early rifles were cut for sight hoods at the depot/armouers level. Looks fine to me.

Without knowing the barrel code tough to say if the barrel was replaced or not.

I would expect the bore dimension (7,9) stamp at top dead center on the barrel flange in 1939. The lack of it would seem to indicate a barrel replacement later on. maybe some markings under the stock edge?

This rifle was for sale and unfortunately it has already sold so I guess I will never know for sure. Thanks for the info, much appreciated.

The cut out is in the "white". Seems that would indicate it was done at the armourer's level.??
