Factory No. 74 Izhevsk Side Mount PEM 1942

I got this rifle as a standard Soviet refurb 91/30. However the side mount holes had been drilled/tapped and not welded like most ex-snipers. So I’m not certain if this is an ex-sniper or unfinished sniper similar to unfinished LSR’s.

What I really need is an original base. I have an original Tula upper with scope but no base and the dimensions of the original mount and repro base are way off. Ultimately an Izzy mount and base would be best.

However to finish it in the meanwhile, I have a repro base/mount and original 1939 PEM scope with crystal clear optics and 90%+ metal.

I’m surprised with my addiction to restoration projects that I don’t take in stray dogs as well.

Nevertheless a rare/scarce example.

Izhevsk base

Oooofaah! Good luck finding a good Tula pem base let alone an Izhvesk base. I had a machinist make mine for my rifle. I’ve been looking for years for an Izhevsk base. Unobtainium. 😕

Very nice rifle, was the relief cut already cut in the stock when you got it? PEM's are probably my favorite WW2 era Sniper rifle, i am working on my second Izzy 42 PEM at this moment and should hopefully have it finished in the next few weeks. Mosin Sniper collectors are really cool guys, and most will gladly help you out with searching for parts.

I had to relieve the stock and had to figure that part out by myself. It’s amazing how many more and accurate resources we have now than compared to only three years ago when I got the project up to this phase of the process.

I have seen the odd Tula base but usually they are paired with a reproduction upper and they want crazy prices as a package deal.

It looks good, i have thought about doing one like that but i will probably just bugger up a good stock. I was asking because i remember a few years ago some guys acquired a rifle that already had the holes drilled and if i remember correctly it had the stock relief cut similarly to yours.

The 42 Izhevsk mounts and bases are a tough find..

That is a cool rifle! If you have the time, please also share a picture of the barrel shank markings.

Which part would you consider the shank?

Picture of how the rifle was found.
I must be getting old, realized that I found the rifle 5x years ago. Mixed in with standard refurb rifles in a crate of 20x rifles with Bulgarian heat treated strand/export stamp on the crate. Each rifle also had a stamped matching bayonet.

How did the repro PEM base turn out and is your machinist up to making additional copies?
I have a '38 ex-PEM I'd like to resniper some day.

I will post a picture at some point. Looks good and it works... my machinist guy is actually a friend who does for enjoyment since he is retired... he has no interest in “working” so to speak but I have the specifications for the Tula bases; and since you are asking re: a 38 I will say you have a Tula. If you would like, I can post or give you the details of the build. Then you need a machinist to make the item. A good machinist is a hard find. Good friends are harder.

Here are some pics of my resnipered exPEM 38 with repro base. Btw. After the machining was done I fire blued the piece in a 900 F oven in my kitchen. No I did not call the fire department. But my wife was nervous. That’s it’s own story.

Mounting screw spacing is different on an Izhevsk than a Tula, or so I am told. Tula had thick and thin bases plus had different thread pitches on early vs late.. Dmitry bases fit like a glove on Tula rifles. Nice rifle.

Mike, I have a few Tula bases that don’t fit Tula rifles. Close but no cigar.. almost as if hand fitted by different armorers.. I can’t confirm this but someone else might have more info regarding this finding.
My fabricated base had to be retrofitted to the scope mount on the dovetail and then attached to the rifle where the previous weld up base screws and pins were located. The dovetail retrofit apparently was the hard part of this project.
