First post... first time owner... what the heck do i have here?

I was given this model 98 by a friend paying debts.

From what i can tell it is an all matching numbers rifle. I have no idea what this stock is and suspect it is added later. It looks like some of the details were ground off at some point. The guy said his grandfather hated Germans and suspects he removed anything that was german (or what he thought was german) The rifle was VERY rusty when i got it. I am keeping it so i cleaned it.

Any insight would help me. There are several things that seem out of place for me. The iron sights, the missing scope mount see bolts and holes on side of chamber.

PLEASE SEE PICTURES.... I can add more pics if you need more info. There are a lot of different stamps on this thing.

Not too much to glean here. At least some parts started life as a German rifle. The stock definitely did not. The huge cheek comb is a dead giveaway there. The original maker (at least for the receiver) and year would have been right on top. Any info stamped into the barrel could tell us things too. This was a very common fate as these were dirt cheap.

Other marks...

It is hard to see in the photo, but when the markings were removed in the top of the rifle, it had "dou." and "44" under it on the top of the chamber. You can clearly make this out with an up close look at the rifle. I will try and put some other markings in the forum tonight.

As well, What is up with the iron sights at the back? Is that from a "sporterized" upgrade or is that German issue in some way? I would then assume the front sight would be a result of this same remaking. I agree, the stock was a dead give away.

No they're both 100% post war. Quite common and popular at the time they're antiques now. Think yours is a Redfield although I won't hold my breath. Commonly called peep sights, aperture or micrometer sights. Front sight is a long ramp type. Probably a Williams or maybe Lyman. This stuff is mostly before my time but I've seen and used them. Effective but definitely not original.

nailed it

The sites are infact redfield and Lyman. Thank you for your feedback. I hope to get to shoot this thing soon. still working on the barrel

cleaning with light elbow grease

How did you clean it???

the gun metal was soaked in a rusk mitigating liquid and then scrubbed with a 0000 steel wool. after rust removal i then gave it a bath in a bluing removal liquid so i could re-blue the metal. i did use a 400 and 600 grit metal sandpaper on some areas of the barrel were there was deep pitting. But sanding was minimal at best.

do you have suggestions? I have tried to do as little as possible. just want to try and make it shoot again. The last owner was less than attentive to the firearms needs. Kind of explains why he is single....

Barrel looks to be nipped...was a stepped barrel to boot...but it has lost its contour. might be good shooter...does the bolt serials match the receiver.?
