I’m not sure that’s bluing. It might be Krylon.

I just saw an auction for a Mitchell's "collector grade" M48 "new" in the box with all the phony paperwork that is already bid to over $750. Apparently there are people who have convinced themselves that they are collectible in their own right.

Haha yes collecting Mitchell’s is like collecting dinosaur coprolites. Yeah it’s a legit fossil..... of crap.

This one's been up for a while now, not selling because people are wiser than to pay >$1350 for it.

The wiser I become in this hobby, the more I gotta thank the Don for polishing the bolts white. It's the ultimate check, you can see it without opening the auction and pass it up faster than any other rifle when doing your auction searches. I feel for the newer guys who might fall for it, but it takes under a minute to be educated enough to know that bolts weren't in the white originally. It's like a big old stupid nod to us (or anyone who does research).
If only all the turds were this open and proud about it, I'd waste no time at all vetting rifles for sale.

Btw I think this is also the one that started out at $6k (or $16k?..) opening bid when he first listed it.

Wow..... It’s mainly the fact that there are people out there who want an original German K98, but don’t know that there are so many out there with issues. To them, a K98 is a K98.

People want one as issued to a German soldier (Don’t we all?). Many probably think this is the case for any K98 they see, so they pay top dollar for them not knowing many are captured examples or a mix match of parts thrown together. Of course, there are people who somewhat know that’s not the case, so they tread carefully.

Honest question here. What would you guys pay for the rifle OP posted? Not as a collectible, but lets say as a range toy.

:happy0180:

IMO a Mitchell is worth less than any Russian or Yugo capture in similar condition, so probably around $500 or so.

since you asked

not worth the shipping or FFL transfer fee fake is fake

Yeah but its still fully capable of launching a bullet downrange. So now its just a 'tool', no collector value at all. So what is a mechanically excellent condition bolt action 8mm rifle worth? Id put it in the same category as all the other, non collectable, milsurp bolt action guns (Turk mausers, Spanish mausers, etc).....about 350 bucks.

Hell, even Mosins are bringing 350 bucks nowadays.

Hey some of us consider Turkish and Spanish mausers collectible! It's just a bonus that theyre still affordable

As a shooter it's worth $500.00 - $600.00 / IF THE BORE IS REAL GOOD.

Do any of you remember when an all matching really nice 98k brought $200.00 , at most ??????

A time when those of us who collected these things were considered BOTTOM FEEDERS by " REAL COLLECTORS" ????

Was talking to a good friend of mine about that a few days ago. I'm to young to remember but he sure does back in the 90s. He remembered having them priced at $300 for a Laminated stock and $400 for a walnut. No one cared about codes back then but they paid more for a walnut stock compared to the laminated ones.

And now look at us we see a nice all matching K98k for $2000 and were like that's not a bad deal!

I remember, a friend of mine , looking at a "stone mint" byf 45 on a table in Louisville , Kentucky in 1977, with a price tag of $150.00 on it.

Tom Jackson turned to me and said, "THAT SON OF A BITCH IS CRAZY. I WOULDN"T PAY $150.00 FOR AN OLD GERMAN MAUSER, IF IT HAD HITLER"S FINGER PRINTS IN THE GREASE !"

Im not a Mauser expert, but Ive been in the C&R game for about 20 years. The last 5 years has seen exponential price increases across the board. Ive never been a 'high end' collector. Ive always enjoyed buying the greasiest, most beat up guns because 1)its history and 2) I could take the gun apart and tinker with it with no fears of scratching it or otherwise hurting value. Given todays prices......there doesnt seem to be much 'bottom of the barrel' stuff left. Its a shame these new kids will never get to experience cleaning off 14 lbs of cosmoline and sneaking the rifle stock in the dishwasher when the wife wasnt looking.
