My unissued Mod 71/84

Senior Member
I have a few unissued rifles ( needless to say not unfired!) including the 71/84 shown below. I think the pictures speak for themselves. I assume it’s condition is the result of its late, 1888, date by which time it was about to become a second tier rifle. As a teaser, I will be posting another unissued rifle in a few days, a 1933 Banner DRP.

Charles, now that's just a pretty rifle. These 71 and 71/84 rifles are beautiful when pristine. I have a spandau jäger 71/84 in slightly more used condition, but just about as pretty.

Keep em coming, I always enjoy seeing your stuff.

Thanks Chris, You really have to marvel at the quality state arsenals we’re capable of in the pre-WW1 era. My first 71/84, traded long ago, came from Hunters Lodge in the late fifties when they were $9.99 and for one cent more you got a second one! Needless to say, the second one wasn’t much!

Many thanks, that’s a beautiful reproduction sling! In the case of this rifle there are no regimental markings on the butt plate tang. These are not uncommon in high condition in this country, I would have thought they would have shipped most extras to the Far East or Africa at some Point, so I wonder where rifles like this one were hiding?

Absolutely beautiful. These rifles were used by the German marines during the Boxer Rebellion, I’m not sure if they were used much else due to the adoption of the Gew 88.

Beautiful! I’d love to get my hands on one sometime. I have seen prices for these all over the place. What would be fair today? Like $1500?

Very nice. I bought one of these from a buddy about 3 years ago, waiting for him to ship it to me.

They seemed to use the finest cuts of lumber with the 71/84s. More striped and burled stocks than any other German rifle. This one is just beautiful!

I have an 1888 Amberg also in excellent condition and isn't unit marked. However, I love shooting it, the most fun out of all my guns. If you do shoot it you have to make your own ammo, cases and bullets are available also reloadable too. Have a few boxes of original ammo for display. Also, had a couple of extra original rounds which I shoot, what a blast.

Reviewing the limited number of 71/84's in the study it does seem by 1888 production they increasingly are found absent unit markings, especially Spandau production. What has often been baffling is the obvious high production, but the absence of a practice to reflect this in the serial number. Neither serialing past four numeric numbers, nor an alphabetic suffix. So far we have not encountered a clear repetition in serial, but I expect to eventually.

SPandau's do seem most commonly encountered of the makers (by far) but Amberg's seem more common than others, - I am sure this is due to survivability among the various makers more than actual production. Erfurt and Danzig's are far less common, especially in near new condition.

Anyway, a very find rifle!

Yeah, I try to be picky with these given that nicer 71/84s are easier to find than nice 71s. It took me a while to find a nice Erfurt.

The 71's are far more interesting, you could really spend a lot of time learning about them and not lose interest, - I think they are preferable to the 71/84's in many ways, at least from a collectors perspective..

Couldn’t agree more, but in the 70’s and 80’s I never was able to find a suitable ‘71 or a matching Gew. 88, both of which I really wanted. I’ve seen more decent ‘71’s lately than I ever saw then.
