Picked this up last weekend. Not up to date on my P38 knowledge. It was a good buy for nothing else but for a shooter.

Seems like I remember reading somewhere that these MI marked frames were made by FN. Does anyone have more information on these? Any idea as to the scarcity? TIA

FN

Yes the 140 proof denotes an FN frame. The late production guns have them. Certainly rarer than standard cyq frames.

You're spot on with the FN frame. Eagle 140 waffenamt identifies it as FN produced as well. According to the charts, X block was produced in December 44. They are a relatively rough block of P38s finish wise. Lots of cool milling marks. Yours has a cog hammer as well which is another late feature.

X blocks fool a lot of people because they think the X signifies Russian Capture. I am not certain there is a huge bump for the FN frame in price. If there were 3 CYQs laid out, I would personally lean towards the one with the FN frame. Would I pay a few hundred dollar premium to get it, probably not.

After more research, one table shows only 1200 in this block made. I was only able to find one other matching example having ever been offered. I’d say that’s pretty scarce.

Nice lookin P38. Finish looks good and so do the grips.
Really like the rough machine marks where it didn’t matter.

Did you get the correct magazine also?

Came with a WWII Walther mag. There’s another P38 AC44 that I’m told came from the same deceased veteran. I should be looking at in a couple weeks. Hopefully it will have the correct magazine.

If you want to shoot this, pick up a post war "fat slide" and blast away. Limit your shooting with the original war time slide. Once she cracks, that's the ballgame. With a post war "fat slide" the chances of that slide cracking are very small.

Love it. I have 4687z so it's also rough as you can imagine. Yours looks in very nice condition and I think it's a keeper.
