I'm thinking for low light too. Might have had that glow in the dark stuff
that was used on watch faces back then.

Looks to be the remains of the "Nachtvisiere" or night sights. Very neat / interesting find. Could you post pictures of what remains of the rear sight?

I once held a K98k Swept back sniper (claimed to be real, but not sure) that had one of these on it. It had some material in it that glowed in the dark for low light shooting. I have not idea if it was real or not.

A member here bought it back in 2012. Sniper collector in France, maybe Vintagescope? Maybe he can share pictures.

Ratnik, that's quite cool and interesting. It looks like a manufactured item, and it's not a "fake". I too think it probably had a luminous front for low light use. It's not for grenade use, as seen here:
http://www.k98kforum.com/showthread.php?82-98k-G.Gr.Ger-Grenade-launcher

It's not an early variant muzzle cover on a post-1940 rifle with a sight hood either. I know there were low light attachments for the Gew.98. Anyone have a pic or info?

The ce44 Swept Back sniper rifle pictured in Robert Spielauers book has an identical front sight attachment as the one in question here. I assume this was the rifle you were referring to.

Yes, today I was told the same. Identical device. So mysteryy is solved.
Seem it was used relatively wide - another guy told that he also found rifles with such front sight attachments in Konigsberg/Kaliningrad area. Another guy send me these pictures - part of the similar sight (top left corner), it was found at former location of the field workshop. Anybody can identify two other parts (the were near this front sight)? One is similar to remote/winter trigger

No news about the equipment, but if this night sight used radium salts in a paste to provide luminescence, the radium was likely in the soil around the find site, and it will still be radioactive. Although it could be expected that it is greatly diffused, the mention of a workplace (where more may have been located) could increase the chance of contamination- don't eat mushrooms from there til you have used a DP5V on them-
