svw45 "a" block I picked up today

I picked up this "a" block svw45 today at a pawn shop and thought I would share it. What caught my eye when I first walked in the shop was the sling. It looks to me to be a bring back that someone's father or grandfather had brought back. I don't see any import marks on it and it doesn't look like a Russian capture to me.

I've taken a few pictures of it but won't have a chance to break it down until later this weekend. The bolt is a total mismatch. Overall the rifle looks mostly phosphate finish to me.

I've noticed on mrfarb's website latewar.com that it shows "a" bloack serial numbers ending at 16XXXa so this one has me a bit stumped with a serial number of 17156a.

The shop had it marked as a Yugoslavian Mauser and I wasn't about to correct them. I made an offer and they took it. It doesn't look humped to me but the bolt certainly has been pieced together. When and where I have no clue. All in all it looked for all intents and purposes to be a legit bring back piece to me.

The serial number has me intrigued because of the serial number range mrfarb has on his website so I'm interested in seeing the discussion on this one. http://www.latewar.com/html/svw.htm

Thanks!

I'm guessing Mike hasn't updated that site for a while as svw45's are recorded well into the 19k range.

Looks like you got a decent score.

Thanks for the information on the serial numbers. I think I did ok considering I paid what I would consider Russian capture price.

Yes hello sir I will take this one Yugoslavian Mauser right here for your listed price lol! Got to love stories like that good find for you buddy.

Nice rifle! Those screws look like they were added at some point, look like regular hardware store screws.

Looking at this again, the receiver to barrel mating surface is very odd. I've never seen one so square and with that big of a gap in the stock inletting. Interesting.

That is a cool rifle and you take very good photos. I wish I could run into something like that at my pawn shop FFL.

The bolt numbering is typical for French svw rifles, it may be a French used rifle. Not all were screwed up with the stock side cut. How about any stock markings you see?

another obeservation.....

It’s a really nice looking rifle, & if there were a pawnshop near me, I’d start looking there.........

but to jbmauser’s observation, the barrel root profile also looks odd, as does the “square” front edge of he receiver. in the photos from above the receiver -barrel junction, I see a change in the barrel finish about half way from the receiver to the rear sight base. The receiver surface texture in the area of the roll stamping looks odd, “normally” the axis of the grinding marks is around the receiver, rather than at a 45 deg angle to it. The material displaced from the letters of the roll stamping seems less worn than it might be after 75 years. IF the receiver had been scrubbed, that might account for a larger than normal gap at the front ring.

Disclaimer: I’m no expert, particularly on late war rifles or svw s in particular. The above features may be entirely typical of the series

On my svw45. Is later being serial number 17056 g. Totally looks different than yours. I have chatter wood with 135 on the wood. Phosphate receiver and bolt. Blued late war screws. Just my observation. I know you have a walnut stock which they did.but there is no eagle on yours. Svw1945

I didn't see any numbering or stamps on the stock other than those in the sling area. I've looked all over it for a Waa of any type and haven't seen one yet.

My schedule this weekend is pretty full but I plan on disassembling it this coming Monday. I'll post more pictures once I get it apart.

The barrel band screws didn't look right to me either but for what I paid I don't have a problem with it.

Here are some more pictures I took this evening. Definitely no waffenampt stamped in the wood. Wood does not looked sanded or otherwise screwed with to me. I took some pictures of the wood and the barreled action where the barrel meets the receiver and I don't see anything odd there myself. There was some light cosmoline inside but no signs of any import marks or scrubbing that I can see. I don't see anything ground breaking but figured I'd share some more pictures of the rifle and questioned areas. I did put a light coat of lemon oil on the stock to help clean some of the grime off it.

A few more pictures. I also took a picture of it with my AX41 while I was at it.

I also took a picture of the ammunition I received with it. It looks Arab to me. Am I right?
