What is the correct color of the K98?

So I am looking at the metal/blueing... It seems that most guns are greyish (almost like a phosphate finish) but it could be battle worn blueing. I have recently seen a pristine gun (no fake) and it was pretty deep black.

What is the correct color (K98 as made)? Is it greyish? Black? Blueish?

Is the blueing deep or just light ?

cheers

Depends on year of manufacture. Early, pre-war rifles had a deep polished look. As time progressed they still had a deep bluing but more of a "satin" appearance and late rifles had a mix of blue and phosphate greenish tint or full phosphate.

What mow said. Also different manufacturers had different bluing results.

dou 43, very matte and almost black bluing: http://www.k98kforum.com/showthread.php?39620-dou-43-c-block
dot 43 and 44, same (or tiny bit more blue) color but shinier bluing: http://www.k98kforum.com/showthread.php?3743-Slow-Learner-dot-1944

This one has much higher polish and the bluing looks, well, bluer to me.

so would early new rifles have a deep glossy black?
afaik the rifles were either blued or phosphated. The tint may look off in bad pictures. You will need to either compare to items in the picture reference or provide good pictures (indirect sunlight works best).
