Picked up this rifle a few days ago. I am not familiar with German 22's but the price seemed decent. From my research it looks to be a ES340B that has had some after factory work done to it. Polished and bent bolt, added rear sight, added lead weight in stock, ect. Feel free to chime in with ay additional info that you see.

Thanks,

Two mounts for scope Added - one on receiver and one on barrel
Buttplate not original (I guess that the stock was also shortened)
Stock machined for bent bolt clearance (The bolt has probably been bent for bolt lever - scope clearance)
Rear sight leaf missing
Holes drilled in the trigger guard (for lead weight?)

Interesting low serial number (5 digits)

Rare rear diopter sight from Mauser's factory.

Intersting rifle because of its low serial number and its rear diopter sight.

I'm counting six digits in the serial number.

The Mauser factory diopter is probably more valuable than the rest of the rifle!

Was the sight a factory up charge. I’m in the rifle a total of about 400. The sight really helps. I was getting a good half dollar group
at 50 yards.

Yes, the diopter was an extra cost option. If the sight was listed separately on ebay or whatever it would sell for about $350 or more.

Not long ago I acquired a close to new condition Mauser ES350B for $125.00. Sounds almost too good to be true (and it is), because missing was the complete stock, bolt, and removable front sight blade. How this came to be is anybody's guess. Reminds me of stories I heard over the years of "estate sale" arms, where rifles were found/sold taken apart...often with components going in different directions and likely never to meet again. What really irked me was only a few months prior, I saw another 350B in a backpack, walking through a local collector show. It looked great until the owner took it out and handed it to me. Then I noticed it had two sets of drilled & tapped holes on the barrel, a missing rear sight and a big chip out of the black plastic buttplate at the toe. Otherwise, the stock was beautiful. Still, would have bought it for the $350.00 seller was asking until I spotted the final indignity. Some dufus had basically ground and bent the hell out of the bolt handle and notched the stock so it would fit closer to the side...all to accommodate a POS scope rig clamped to the receiver grooves. I could take no more, so away it went.

WG96, your rifle, though modified after-the fact with the auxiliary scope mounts and bent bolt/notched stock, etc. should have no disadvantage as to accuracy. Looks like some previous owner enjoyed using it and so should you. If you take it out to the range, would like to hear your appraisal of how well it shoots...which is what it was made for.

The diopter rear sight was a seldom ordered Mauser special order. As mentioned above, it is worth more than you paid for the rifle! Here is a page from a 1936 Mauser catalog which shows two of the optional diopters available.
