Recent swp45 post with odd leather sling prompted me to post this rifle. It has a canvas sling purportedly on the rifle when the gentleman(who I bought it from) got it from the vet. My own opinion is that these makeshift slings are not some type of official issue, rather expedients by German or GI's as a way to carry a rifle when no proper sling was available. This material appears to be WW2, and is held together with helmet split pins. There are legitimate canvas slings, but none that I am aware of for the 98k (there are MP40 slings from canvas). This rifle is from the next to last letter block, and is all phosphate.
