ax - hole
Here are some more pictures I have bought over these past few months.

Some showing the Gew98m in combat and training, a unit of German police armed with the Kar98a, the trusty MG08/15 maxim still being used, and many more.

Wolfgang when do you think that picture was taken around 1933 or even earlier? And thank you for the clarification there's no writing on the back of the picture to give out any more information

That is not Police, but rather very early SS.

TKs on the hats? Good eye. I wonder if Jordan's guess of 1933 is accurate? Oh and you're finding some very interesting photos so thanks for sharing them!

The NSDAP Party eagle was introduced in 1930 as cap insignia. It was replaced with the SS eagle in 1935.
Prior to 1930 the SS units had the TK over a tricolor cockade. At least as per regulations.
PS: IIRR the black uniform with visor cap was introduced in 1932. ??

I know everyone wants to punch some SS guys in the face lol. Is there anything more we can learn from the photograph? Unfortunately there were no markings on the back it.

I'll be honest I bought the photograph mainly because it was cheap and it showed Kar98a carbines being used in the interwar period. Again I thought it was police not SS.

The SS and Police were one in the same eventually, this picture I can't date and although many policemen were probably good men through the pre-war years, it is typical of all totalitarian regimes to place reliable men in such institutions that protect the state. Himmler eventually absorbed the police and I suspect most of the men with character were systematically and cautiously replaced with men who had proven their reliability (like these).

As for the picture, it reflects the true nature of national socialist ideology and its character... far more than most pictures of SS men, - while most propagandized images show idealized Nordic stock, with god-like physiques and hard features, something Nietzsche could conjure up from his imagination, the true nature of the SS is better reflected in these men, - hard men to be sure, surely with little sentimentality or character or honor, men whose faces could as easily be believe in prison stripes or the attire of street thugs and muggers.

National socialism's rise to power was not some predestined eventuality or inherent in the nature of German society (as anyone watching television you can see this is the human condition in its most primitive state, envious, lustful, barbaric and immune to reason, which is why religion has always been used to suppress human nature, - nazis, bolsheviks and the nuts burning cities and beating and robbing anyone too weak to defend themselves are little different than the barbarian tribes Herodotus tells us of...), Hitler's rise to power was as remarkable and baffling as the campaigns of 1940 in western Europe, these thugs were an significant aspect of that rise to power and such men were not ideological, not in any meaningful way, - as Röhm once stated, many of his men were former communists, you can also see this lack of ideological firmness in how so many of these men behaved in 1945-1946, the Sgt. Schultz of the SS, "General" Kaltenbrunner who saw nothing, knew nothing and what he couldn't dismiss was only following orders.

Besides, national socialism and communism are blood brothers, in all their core tenets they are very close to one another, their views of the relationship of the individual to the state, their views on private property are very similar beyond the facades, neither had any love of Jews, neither planned outright slaughter initially, both view groups united by faiths that are supreme to the state as enemies, plenty of Poles and Jews were murdered for the most trivial of reasons (so too Christians, anyone who placed god above the state were enemies), before 1942 the Soviets were far worse in this regard, - Stalin easily murdered more Eastern Europeans and Russians than Hitler had, both were madmen and it taints the history of the United States that we allied ourselves with one monster to kill another, both equally evil and depraved, - these men and their counterparts in the communist party and Soviet Union are alike in character, put these thugs in NKVD uniforms and they could easily fit in...

This smacks me as a brutally honest view of what reality probably was.

Odd that this never gets more press. I think it's without question... at least in my mind that Stalin murdered many more than Hitler and he just kind of gets a pass.

A monster and a madman without the mental/physical illness.

Steven Kotkin states Stalin was responsible for more Russian deaths than Hilter, though it is true that Hitler's plans were genocidal for Slavs and Russians in general. I do not think it is debatable that the only factor placing Hitler in 3rd place of mass murders of the 20th Century (behind Mao and Stalin) is his defeat in 1945. Though Hitler was so sick and of poor health late in the war that it is very probable that he would have died before he could have overtaken either.... and without Hitler, I seriously doubt his farce of an ideology or "cult" would have survived him to carry out his desires.. name a single nazi leader with the ability to replace him, most were neurotics, drug addicts, dimwits and all were kleptocrats, none had the instinct or intuition - and audaciousness to hold such a regime together. None were austere or modest in extravagance like Hitler, Goring was probably the only one mentally capable, but he was a mess throughout the war.... Most of the nazi leadership were clowns of one variety or another, most were holding political sinecures, almost none were capable of lower administrative positions, needless to say holding Hitler's circus together... killing Hilter was the one time in history where assassination was probably the best option and had a likelihood to work.

Anyway, Hitler's regime would end shortly after his death, it is almost a certainty the Army would come out on top eventually, though after December 1941 Germany would have lost regardless of what they did...
