These I would say are rare, maybe quite rare, but I don’t think overly sought after either. I wanted one since first seeing one years and years ago. I think there is some info out there that claims paratrooper issue, but as far as I know the only period photo evidence Shows them used by mounted troops. One like this is pictured in Vol 2 and they mention how useless it is. And yeah it’s not overly convenient, but having one on a rifle, in hand, it seems easy enough to open the cover and then rotate the mounting strap assembly , therefore putting the whole affair off to the side. It was clearly meant to remain mounted so I think this is how it must have been used. Regardless this is a neat identical twin to Bill Grist’s cover. He has both makers. A dealer has a twin to his other maker. Not sure how many more are out there. Jmb42 marked with ink stamp Mod.98 designation inside. They always kind of reminded me of the Japanese “coconut” pistol holsters.

Sweet, that's a nice one Andrew.

Sniper collectors always want those because they are in Law's book.

I actually have seen a period photo where it did appear to be a sniper rifle with one of these. Maybe Dave has a pic in his pile of sniper photos.

Back Saver?

That the sight covers may have been used by mounted troops to protect the sight & uniform, (& backs) like motorcycle troops, truck drivers & gunners. This would make practical sense. Photos of long columns moving in choking dust might be another motivator, to keep out SOME of that dust/dirt.

It is especially interesting to me that the photos in the attached thread show the troops practicing shooting w/ cover in place (let aside the standing up on horse’s back)

Andrew , could You post the pic you mention ??. I've never seen nor have I ever heard of a period photo showing one of these sight covers in use on a Sniper rifle . You are the first person I know of who's actually seen such a photo . That would be a very interesting photo to see .

I kinda lied Dave. This was one of the pics, it sure looks like it to me....but I’m entirely open to being wrong.

I think the first photo was the original angle. I can't see a bolt and it looks like the sling is attached on the left side (in the first photo).
