Imperial unit marking

I found this metal detecting near a late 19th/early 20th century coastal defense battery near Boston. It's without doubt for a Gew.88, what its doing buried near coastal fortifications in Massachusetts is beyond me.

Any idea as to the unit marking? My guess is a Garde unit, but I'm having difficulty linking it to a unit.

Fusilier, that's the part I was missing. I suspected the E was Ersatz but wasn't 100% sure. Thanks!

Now what the heck was it doing buried near coastal artillery in Massachusetts

Slipped off a reenactor’s rifle some time before you found it? Placed there by an unknown vet who maybe felt it belonged there more than on his dresser? Cool find, in any case!
