Have this BYF 42 sporter that I'm restoring . Not sure about barrel as there are very few markings Doesn't appear to have been scrubbed but does have WAa135 and what looks like a poorly struck 0. Sorry I can't get better pic. I have correct WAa marked pieces and rest matches. Opinions?

While little can be said with such small pictures, the "O" is probably a "D" and the waffenamt if e/135 would be appropriate for a 1942 byf; it took awhile for the simplification measures came into practice, but by 1942 they were in full force. (the measures most apparent were the reduction of markings, acceptance, and serialing of parts that were deemed unnecessary)

Thanks, Yes I agree with better lighting it does indeed look like a D. I have e/135 parts needed on this one. With a ff block i'm going with laminate cupped and solid milled front band.

Finally finished this project up with a repro SSR type 3 and scope.

To recap,

Before: BYF42 rescue.jpg

Basic rework: DSCF3207.jpg

Done: DSCF4015.jpg DSCF4016.jpg DSCF4017.jpg

This rifle was a great shooter before but at temps in the 20's or near zero for the next couple of days it will have to wait

Great job on the restoration of your byf 42. looks especially sharp as a ssr sniper version.
I did this same thing to 1938 Sauer RC. Looked great and shot quite well. May do it again
someday....Tks for showing and the pics.'

Accumounts scope and mount? Who did the smithing?
Looks good!

Yes an Accumount with RSM knock off ZF39. I have seen mixed reviews of these scopes, some say garbage others say no issues, Guess we will find out, but it will due until I can find something more appropriate, a post war example would work but what I have seen so far all had various type mount rings soldered on. I keep looking.
Work done by a small shop in the FW area.

Got to the range today with the BYF rescue. Minor windage adjustment on the SSR3 was all that was needed to get it dialed in. This was using a 6 o.clock hold on the 3" paper disc. @ 75yds. Then moved to steel plate @ 125yds and so far the RSM scope is doing fine.

Hey Dave, sorry to give a bump to an old post, but I am curious how that RSM scope has held up over the past year and half. They seem way too cheap to last any decent amount of time.

I am very keen on hearing this assessment as well, excellent opportunity and a great question MisterBeeker

Scope was still good after at least 500 rds. down range. I have replaced it with a vintage scope which works just as well so my son has it now for one of his projects

My own unmolested byf 42. It's from the L block, and has most early features still present but no serial numbers on the bolt heads. The barrel code starts with 41D. Still has the H upper band and range markings on the underside of the sight leaf. It does have an invisible, neatly done duffle cut repair. I believe the gun served in Italy, and possibly North Africa or Sicily. judging by the service record of the vet that captured it and brought it home.

Hmm. I found one pretty easily listed on Slamazon for 360. Not sure if that's a good price of if it's available elsewhere for less but with rings and bases it seems like a decent deal for a clone/tribute/reenactor piece. Or even just a fun shooter?

I think I paid about 350 for the RSR, This is the prewar I replaced it with I paid about the same as I recall off e bay antique store.
