Stock repair question

Can anyone recommend a stock repair specialist? I have a stock with a large chip missing next to the magazine that needs a depot type repair. The stock is matching to the rifle and well proofed, so my preference is to keep it. I have one quote for $300 from the one response I could get, just wondering if anyone has recommended vendors.

Thanks

Perhaps if you post photos of the needed repair we could at least try to figure the best way to do it. For instance how a German Armorer might approach it. :happy0180:

Here's the best one of it:

When I look at this damage, I don't believe that a German Armorer would attempt to repair it because it's at perhaps one of the very weakest parts of the stock and they usually had the option of fitting a new stock in a much more timely manner then fooling around trying to repair it. In your case I understand the desire to keep the original stock. It looks like the damage was inflicted perhaps by defending against a blade and so is a very interesting part of it's history. If it was mine I would cut a piece of preferably European walnut of a similar straight grain pattern, make it fit as closely as possible, gluing it on with Brownell's Accra Glass epoxy, while adding whatever portions of the brown and black color that they provide. Masking off the original finish is advisable. I would personally try to preserve the spot where the sabre, sword, bayonet or "E" tool struck. If you take it too someone and they have no idea what any of this means, then take it to someone else. Probably the most experienced people at making this kind of repair disappear are the guys on the ALR forum (American Long Rifles Forum) who deal with this kind of repair quite frequently. We can speak more of this if you so desire.

I would just leave it alone since it is an all matching gun. For me it gives it a bit of that been there look which I like. If it isn't done correctly it will look worse and you wouldn't be able to undo it.

I have a trashed Gew 91 donor stock, so I'll likely use that. I found a stock repair specialist in the $300 range, was just wondering if anyone had any other options/vendors.
