Greetings, I am new to the forum but have been reading a lot of information regarding the history of mausers on this site. I have learned so much that you all inspired me to do some research on a rifle given to me by my wife’s uncle several years ago. He was a Purple Heart recipient and was wounded in Europe and brought this rifle back and unfortunately had it sporterized many years ago and used it for deer hunting. He took me under his wing when I began hunting many years ago and I have had it in my gun cabinet for many years. I took it to a gunsmith a few years ago to have it checked out. The crown on the barrel needed some work but the barrel and rifling overall were in good shape and now shoots very well. I really wanted to return the rifle back to its original form as close as possible for a first timer. I found a decent stock that I cleaned and oiled, found 623 H and sling clamps (not numbers matching but original) along with a cleaning rod and sling.
I don’t think that the rifle had great value as the stock had been cut down but was all matching numbers and I thought I would at least try to restore a piece of history I will use it this year to hunt white tail with my sons and bring back fond memories of my hunts with Uncle Ken!
Thanks you all again for passing on your knowledge and inspiration!
