Hi all,

Not exactly a rare maker/date but damn, the condition on this one was too good to pass up. The price was also below current market.

1916 Erfurt Kar98

All factory matching*
(*The rear band was being very stubborn, so I didn't want to mar up virgin wood. Stock matches externally, so no reason to think otherwise. Also, I believe barrel codes are pretty predictable with these-- I'll give it a more concerted effort if you need it though Paul)

Awesome carbine im wondering where you all find your rifles more, locally or online?
A bit of everything. Networking and meeting other collectors is the absolute best way to open new doors. You usually only do well on GunBroker on Buy it Now sales these days and gunshows have been of lower quality generally (SoS and bigger shows less so, but local gun shows are weaker and weaker-- unless you want MREs, jerky or fudge [emoji23])

Just curious....how much is market price these days for an example such as this?
"Market" is a fluid term these days... Maybe high 1800-2000 is the auction price. 1500-1800 fair collector price. Just a guess. I was 1400 on this.

Chris, no worries on the BC, certainly not worth damaging the wonderful stock... Erfurt is not especially consistent, but in this range it is probably Bismarckhütte or BSI, though Böhler is possible. Most barrels are one of the three, but in this range G-L, its most common for the first two. Either way it is not as important as what is already shown (bolt flat & stock patterns) as trends are most useful on components that are easily replaceable, both for alteration evaluations and trends in general, also useful when dealing with loose components -questions of what this stock or bolt came out of, year-range, which can be guessed if enough are trended...

Erfurt/98a is perhaps one of the best projects I have left to do, at least in M98 trending, I have been working on then and there is surprising consistency for this maker, within ranges. I thought they were the most diverse, but really none are truly as diverse in patterns as I imagined a few years ago... This is an exceptional example (a comment very common in replies to your discoveries of late!)!
