Default asterisk on rear base of turret mount K98

I have noticed that on the rear base of turret mount K98s there is always the WAa135 and sometimes , but not always , an asterisk . So my questions to you specialists ( Dave first of all... ) are : what does it means the asterisk , and why is not always present?

According to "Kriegsmodell" book, its a stamp to significate a "subcontracting part". In fact I always saw the asterisk on LT base used to make a HT rifle...

I suppose you are right! I have one k98 byf44 "a" letter block high turret mount but with LT rear base : well , here we have the asterisk togheter with the WAa135 . On my other k98 hig turret mount (byf44 "d"letter block) the rear base is the regular one and there is no asterisk , just the WAa135 is present.

    Dave,

I have wondering this same thing, but a low turret rear base has a notch/cut out in it I believe. I have two photos of HT bases here with * and neither has the notch/cut out. I have never seen a photo or a real LT base without the notch/cut out. So I am not sure about this.

Also, on the B block High Turret there is a intertwined "RW" symbol on the top of the rear mount under that spring steel plate with the screw in the middle. That "RW" symbol is usually on internally/possibly revised Mauser Oberndorf parts, so I would not guess it possibly not a subcontracted part.

Photos are of 3 HT and 1 LT rear bases. The LT base has the notch/cut out, but hard to see in photo.

Is it a Low Turret Base that got modified into a High Turret Base? Is that what you are saying Dave?

Actually the * marking is not for a subcontracted part. It's a marking that normally denotes a part that was rejected and sent back for repair. It's possible that the bases were so scrutinized for acceptance that it was easy to reject them the first time, and that may be why you see so many with the marking? That is speculation.
