Waffenfabrik Mauser Oberndorf 1914 Gew98

Warrior1354

ax - hole
Finally I'm able to get this very interesting 1914 dated Gew98 posted up. Been a slow year for nice Gewehr 98 rifles. Too be honest I have not come across many rifles this year. But, I'm so happy I was able to acquire this special rifle from a very nice collector out of my home state here in Indiana. Strangely enough this rifle was found in Michigan the same state where my Amberg and DWM 1914 rifles came from. Anyway this rifle was bought at a small estate sale back in 2017 and I contacted the owner then, to help him in details and information for his fine Gewehr 98. Fast forward three years and I contacted him if he might be interested in a trade deal. Being I was on the hunt for all the 1914 made rifle. Again strangely enough I picked the perfect Gewehr 98 rifle for him my unit marked DWM 1908. What made the rifle so perfect was all the battlefields he toured in Europe last year that unit took part in the fighting. It was like the deal was suppose to happen. So we met and exchanged rifles and talked about WW1 and Gewehr 98 rifles for almost an hour last month. A very fine gentleman to do business with and I told him I will try to find a matching cleaning rod and nice original sling for his rifle one day. Again thank you very much Rob.

Now for the rifle it is mostly factory original but it did pass through a depot #7 Rastatt. They replaced the hand guard, the lower barrel band, Rear sight slider tab, and the complete trigger-guard assembly. I did swap out the mismatched follower and floorplate and installed some of my Imperial armorers spares though. Firing pin is matching but it is clipped which I will get repaired later on this year.

So in the end I'm very happy with this rifle, even though I had to let go of one my beloved early Gewehr 98 rifles from my collection. But I made it a goal that I would collect the entire 1914 dated Gewehr 98 rifles and now I'm 80% of the way there! Now what you guys want is the pictures and me to stop chanting!

So enjoy!

The 1914 gathering set so far, the last one needed is the Spandau 1914! Will post pictures of the full group when it's complete.

Such a great snag Jordan! Glad you worked out a good trade. These are tough to come by. Now we just need to keep our eyes out for a Spandau! You can do this!

I am glad you got the time to detail it, a great addition to trends as the key parts are factory. It is amazing it survived the whole war with such minimal replaced parts. I hope (one day) you can get a clean-straight Danzig/14 also, though I agree Danzig is covered already, it would be especially neat to see a clean D/14 besides the rest. None of these are easy and you are not the first i have met that wanted to get a 1914 full set, most give up but you are having good results with your determination!

I appreciate the kind words Paul. Too be honest I still can't believe I have found four of the five 1914 dated Gew 98 rifles in less then one year. And yes a straight up 1914 Danzig would be very cool, but I'm very happy with my 1907/14 though. Still if a nice all matching 1914 Danzig comes up for sale for the right price you bet I will buy it. Now I know finding that Spandau will be elusive, the last one your always looking for turns out to be the hardest for some reason. Oh and good friend of mine thinks I should have a 1914 Erfurt Kar98a being I like Erfurt so much lol!

And if I missed anything please let me know.

I agree, the 07/14 is a fine rifle and suitable, just for the optics it would be better... As for adding Kar.98a production, you would need a Danzig/14 also, though much more difficult than an Erfurt/14. There are dual makers for such a purpose, though dual dated also... some Danzig/14/15's are known, Erfurt made in 1915, they carry an "E" above (top of receiver- WMO did these also, I stupidly traded a really nice one for a K98k... worse a dou/44!) and have Erfurt acceptance/FP, though technically these are 1915's diverted from Danzig when they dropped the Kar.98a in 1915.

The latter would be hard to find anyway, both known are dogs, far more elusive than normal Danzig/14's which are damn difficult also. I do think a full line up would be a great goal, though getting the G98's lined up would be a great achievement in its self! You are young enough, determined enough and lucky enough to accomplish this though!

Jordan, I'm still tickled pink at how this all worked out and glad you like the rifle. FWIW, if I ever stumble across a 1914 Spandau you will be the first to know. Rob

Rob I greatly appreciate that buddy and like said before will try to find you a matching cleaning rod for that Gewehr as well as an original sling. I'm glad that rifle had a nice lid for you though. I'll be touch if I find anything buddy.

And Michael thank you very much like I said will be on the hunt for what info I can find for your project.

I know this is an old thread but it's the only thing I could find in reference to the 1914 waffenfabrik mauser a-g oberndorf a. n gewehr 98, I came across one 2 years ago and bought it for what I'm assuming was a good price and is in decent shape and no import marks, im searching for any historical value

I'd start your own thread with pictures. We cant tell you much of anything without those.

Good pics Stock acceptance on right side, keel and wrist, Left, right and face of receiver, bolt SN, Stock SN, underside of bolt handle, buttplate would be an ideal spread.
