Gewehr 98 Spandau 1916 9779z

Got into a thing the other day and rephotographed a few Gewehrs I’ve had for a while, including this one. Got this in 2011, one of my best finds at the OGCA. Matching but for the striker assembly and overall quite nice.

Cyrus, what thing could you ever be talking about? Hmm.. sounds vaugely familiar. Lol

Love this rifle. Such a nice example.

Glad to get the bolt acceptance, in 2011 you didn't get it (and back then I apparently wasn't as keen on it!); over the years what I track has changed, especially for Imperials. Got the BC, front of RS where its suppose to be, Krupp like most are in this range (Böhler group around too)

I agree, this is a nice rifle, - another thing that has changed for me recently... I have a keener appreciation for any fully original (factory) rifle in decent condition - not good, just decent is enough; even the most numerous variations, maker dates, even the biggie, Erfurt/17, are a lot tougher if you give any priority to original-matching and especially if you exclude interwar worked rifles or carbines. They are all significantly scarcer than their 98k cousins, though I think the scarcity compares well with equally nice condition early 98k production (say pre-38). I think that would be a valid measure, - wartime G98/98a survival rates in upper grades or even decent rifles, fully matching or very close, number about the same.

Glad the photos were helpful then! Yeah I remember when I focused on serial numbers in photos, acceptance and proofs seemed too numerous to photograph. Now I just photo them all.

I know what you mean about finding them all original and in good shape. That’s one thing that’s been holding me back recently, not many left out in the wild.

I have learned over the last twenty years that you simply can't take too many photographs of your rifles... when I come across a file of one of the rifles I once owned (typically while trending) I am amazed at how few photos I took, often almost devoid of critical aspects. I guess one should be careful who they criticize for providing inadequate photos in auctions or asking questions! It is similar to writing anything, - just as any author you can name that has been writing for a lengthy time on a subject, philosophy, history, or economics and politics, - the contrasts to how the mind and thought processes evolve can be mind boggling if you do not take into consideration how people change over time (including great authors or other practitioners of a profession) that is subject to opinion or change (like economics or philosophy) - indeed history perhaps the most if the author is worth reading as one that maintains a firm conviction over such a subjective study as "history" typically must keep an open mind and look at things objectivity or they run the risk of not being taken serious.. or not deserving to be anyway.

Anyway, when I come across old rifle files it never ceases to disappoint me that I neglected to do an adequate set of pictures, worse often I find I took the rifle apart but missed a BC or lower flat or any number of stock acceptance stamps, rarely I even have noted i neglected the RR over 20 years ago!

This is not only true of photos from years ago, but I sometimes a mere two months. Realized how many things I missed, and how yellow the lighting was, so I rephotographed this one. Again!

Nice rifle Cyrus. I appreciate the fact that you’ve taken photos for reference, which helps determine what’s right on these rifles.
