I was given a K98 recently. Prior to getting it today, I tried to do some research on it in an attempt to identify if it would be safe to fire surplus 8mm Mauser ammo in it. First thing I did when I got it home was check the headspace. Bolt locked on the Go, would not lock on the No-Go. Figured it is safe in that respect.
It appears to be a small ring, measures at 1.293. The bolt and receiver are the three lug model. It has a handguard retaining hood on the receiver, not on the rear sight. Only rifles I had been able to find with the retainer ring on the receiver were Turkish. The rifle is nearly bare of markings. The only matching serial numbers are the receiver an barrel. It is marked "K98," not "Gew98" or "Mod98." I saw no proof marks, only a "0" on the barrel between the receiver and the rear sight. The safety is three position, but does not look like the standard safety. It is parkerized, much slimmer, and the third position is not all the way to the left.
I will upload more photos in replies to this post.
