Karabiner 98 Danzig 1910 3667

Been updating the reference thread and realized I hadn’t posted this Danzig 1910 Karabiner 98. It’s a warhorse bordering on beater, but I like it. Barrel bands, stacking hook, rear sight, forward action screw, ejector box, and buttplate are mismatched. The front is rough: I imagine it spent some time nose down in the dirt. Given the condition, I’m betting someone harvested the original buttplate for the unit mark.

Regardless of condition I like it nice to see you back Cyprus! Good friend of mine has a nice 1913 Danzig kar98a with dust cover I would love to own.

Indeed it is totally jealous of it he's probably got one of the best 98a collections I have seen hoping to work out a couple deals on a few of them. But to get something you have to give up something equally as valuable!

Maybe we can work out something planning on going down and shooting some WW1 machine guns with him here in about 2 weeks.

Thanks for sharing the pics and the knowledge on this pre-war 98a. It is funny to see the same parts being "simplified/rationalized" (lock screws, follower spring, extractor collar, as far as stamps are concerned) on 98a and 98k with a time difference of 30 years.

Dave (DD) has a 1910 Danzig marked to an Ulanen Regiment, but several others are non-unit marked or support troops. The closest to yours recorded, a 3800 block 98a is unmarked to unit, but it is possible this rifle was Cavalry (with limited observations it is most probably unmarked, but Cavalry is second most likely, as two are Cavalry in the first block of 1910 and the support formations are in later blocks, - of course this is based upon a miniscule sample compared to made)

Still a very nice rifle and the pictures are far better than those from 2010!

** I should say, generally, unit marked rifles seem to group to a degree, though observations are far to limited to be confident in a firm pattern.

Thanks, Paul. That is exactly what I’ve been curious about, how similar Kars are marked.
