SA dagger - unusual maker

I recently picked up this SA dagger with an unusual maker mark. I believe it is Koch & Rau. I can’t find any similar daggers with this maker on the big dealer web sites so I assume they were a small producer. Grip to cross guard fit is fantastic!

Rare maker. Only a very few early SA dolch observed from this producer. Apparently based in Stuttgart but maintained a branch office in Solingen. You have to admire the early quality. I especially like the dark wood of the grip. Nice dagger!

Quality maker

Whoever they were they did make a quality product. They grip has dark swirls through the wood, really a nice piece. Jack, maybe soon you can check it soon at Allentown!! December is 😞. We are hoping for May 2021.

Very nice SA.

McSarr score is a 7 for scarcity if this is an RK Koch & Rau .... Eickorn & Pack (1) are most common... while 39 makers are the rarest (10). According to Mike McAlvanah... who did the scoring.... any SA in category 8, 9, 10 are rare. Thirty eight were scored a "9", thirty nine an "8", and thirty four a "7".

McSARR= Mike McAlvanah's SA Rarity Rating.... his data is from 18,000 sighting

Yeah that's a beautiful piece. The metal work and finish still and that dark wood really make it. Thanks for sharing!

Bob,

Can you post a link to that chart with ratings?

John...I hope Spring is the return of the Forks...

Better pics of the blade

Some better pics of the blade showing crossgrain from tip to cross guard.

Better not.... it's a data sheet sold by the author and MD, Mike McAlvanah... great guy, who I see at the MAXX show. He's a hand surgeon... his info cannot be reproduced. Data was collected from 1979 - 2009.

Rarity Scale

Very nice dagger indeed! They're great when they're in such good condition, but you can still see that they're old!
Although I have a few that look like they just came from the factory, which is great in terms of value, they sometimes lack the character.
Since it's already been said, yes it's a 7 out of 10 in rarity.
Yes Bob from OHIO is absolutely right, there's a copyright on the McSARR listing!
Mike McAlvanah gave me his last rendition (2013) when we he was able to make a deal with me for a very rare dagger! He even autographed it for me.
A really nice and knowledgeable guy! He had a client who, after the deal, ended up having an SA dagger from EVERY (!!!) maker there ever was.
Mine was an Artur Melcher (ARMESO), Solingen-Merscheidt. In the group of the rarest of the rare.
He had spent decades looking for one and saw mine on a forum and tried to get it from me. I refused because it was my very first SA dagger.
Since I kept refusing, after a couple of years he went for the "big guns" and sent Mike McAlvanah my way to try to make a deal. He is a very persistent man!!!
Knowing his client really wanted that dagger, I ended up trading it for a beautiful near mint Eickhorn partially ground Rӧhm. The inscription itself is untouched,
with parts of the name still legible. That's fine because if one needs to view the signature, I have a picture next to it signed by Ernst himself back in 1932!!
If anyone's interested, I can try to take a few pics of the dagger and picture and post them....
I find them more interesting than a full Rӧhm, because the original owner half-heartedly tried to file or grind off the name after the "night of the long knives".
So history really speaks through this thing!
I was happy with this because I bought the ARMESO back in 1986, and didn't want to shell out 2013 dollars for a Rӧhm dagger.
So it was a win-win situation!
