Hey guys, did Mauser ever use Walther 359 firing pin covers? i picked up a nice byf44 today, saw the 359, grabbed the gun anyway. byfs dont show up often in the wild here.

I wouldn’t think so. It looks a whole lot like an early (ac42 early c block or earlier) Walther slide cover. If it were Mauser, it would have been stamped with a e/135 or e/WaA135. If it were an ac44, I would have thought that an early part simply got mixed in the slide cover’s bin, but it’s a Mauser pistol. My best guess is that the original unmarked slide cover was damaged or lost. The one on it now was either obtained during the war or post war and replaced the original unmarked Mauser one. It would not have come from Mauser like that.

Looks like a really nice P.38. I have a little earlier y block byf44 than yours. Out of all the P.38’s, the byf44’s have survived in the nicest in condition.

It was replaced at some point. A byf 44 should have a blank cover. 1942 is the only year Mauser had small parts marked, Walther dropped small parts acceptance that same year. According to Alexander Krutzek's P38 book, "Small parts E/135 accepted guns are known until serial number 1200 (in 1942) Some guns above serial number 1200 are known which also have the small parts acceptance E/135, at least on the take down lever".

I also have a y block P38. 75y.

Careful, p38’s multiply as fast as 98k’s. Looks like a nice one!

thx everyone, i expected this was the case, but wanted to check in case Walter parts were used by Mauser occassionally. The guns real nice, and will most likely end up with a friend trying to complete his Mauser pistol collection

As above, if you wanted to switch it, you hold the harder part to find and should have no problem finding the right one. Usually happens the other way around.

thx guys, this ones going to my friend, he can decide although i expect he will switch the cover. if anyone needs the walther cover let me know, ill connect you with my friend
