A while back I found a nice K98 Action Cover and I was wondering how and why these were used?

Looks good.

I'd have to say this one is good.. It looks almost to nice. It's luftwaffe blue and they came in green as well. It wraps around the action keeping sand ect. out of the action. There is a photo in b.b.o.t.w. that shows one in use in a vehicle in north africa..

Thank you very much, I got this out of an old collection with a Luftwaffe 42 1940 Bolt mismatch rifle.

Thinking out-loud, if I am in a jeep and I have my rifle with this action cover on and there is an ambush, I am done?

Nice one. The "Luftwaffe" blue covers seem to be more common than the "Army" green ones for whatever reason.

Any thoughts on this one? Made of leather and bearing no markings. I snagged this off eBay about 10 years ago and always suspected it must be for a commercial rifle???

Maybe Imperial, but I agree it is probably a commercial cover. Simpsons has a Brazillian marked one for sale.

I have some leather ones that look just like that. Bought them as Brazilian, not all had markings, and they varied in leather quality & finish. Some smooth polished, pebble grain or with lines on them. The marked ones had a brazilian arsenal mark. JL

Are they desirable?

Then there is the simplified police design for their 98 rifles that was intended to more protect the uniforms from soiling when parading with a rifle on the shoulder. They came in two colors.

I have all 3 of the k98 breech covers (green, blue and oilcloth). None are specifically Luftwaffe or any other branch, FWIW. Blue or green are both ordnance canvas colors. If the blue was meant for Luftwaffe only, it would not have a general wehrmacht waffenamt, but a Luft proof. Also, there would not be so many blue canvas MG34/42 covers produced, IMHO.
