Nice one Bruce! I have a "y" block 1937 S/42, like yours, in a laminated stock, a non-import marked bolt m/m....I will try to get some pics and add them if thats ok...

S/42 laminated

Hey pzjgr - post the pics - more is better! Also I will be keeping track of laminated serials in 1937 for the
book, so bring it on. Also sorry for the crappy pics - will update with better images as time permits.

Well, Mike has the full data sheet on the rifle, I can tell you it is 818 y. Lam stock and handguard, both are well marked, and numbered in the channel, and the keel of the butt, so I know it is a righteous early lam stock, and not a replacement...I will get pics when I can and post them...

Well, I finally dug the "y" block 1937 S/42 out of the closet, and got some pics...its an all matching but the bolt (bummer) gun with a red glue lam stock. Not in as nice of shape as Bruce's but I like it because it's a very late 37 with the laminated stock. The stock is numbered both on the keel and in the channel. The lam handguard is also numbered in the channel....

S/42 1937 Laminated

Mauser started working on plywood stocks as early as 1935. It took them 2 years to get all the wrinkles
out. More data would help pin down when these laminated stocks started to appear in 1937.
Regardless of bolt MM, a tough example to find.

Do you guys think using the lams was more or less sporadic, or was there a fairly hard switch?

Bruce:
I have a JP Sauer 1937 with a "p" suffix that has
a early mathcing laminate stock.

AFAIK they only started issuing laminated stocks experimentally in the late 1937 rifles....so no, laminated stocks in 1936 would probably be a no....

Funkel, that is pretty cool, it sure isn't far from mine....but she is rough! Thats some pretty heavy pitting...wonder if it got that way during the war (battlefield loss that sat a while) or if it was post war poor storage....

There are no laminate stocks in any maker prior to 1937, and any 1937 laminated is scarce.

Hey Tod,

My stock has quite a few markings....starting on the right hand side of the butt, the standard stuff by the bolt disassembly lug...E/63 over "H", with 2 E/63's below that...on the keel...2 E/63's, "K", s/n 883, also has 883 in the barrel channel...

There is no way to tell for sure of the bolt replacement is a wartime thing or postwar...unless perhaps your bolt is an un-numbered armorer replacement, or possibly if you have re-work marks on the stock...

Its tough to tell a lot from your pics, would need more overall pics, etc...but I am pretty certain the Germans wouldn't have added a sling swivel to the stock, most likely that is post war done....

Hello,
Here is mine. It is the series "v".
The stamp "AN" means that the weapon is no longer able to shoot in France.

Hey, here's some better pics(check out the recoil lug!) you'll notice a few shrap chunks on it. Found a Luftwaffe ''L'' on it!

Well, a couple of things I would point out...it looks like your stock is really shiny...not sure if is some sort of oil, or if its been shellac'ed or Poly'd or something. I would think about carefully removing that finish, that would probably help a lot....
