A few years ago (10+ years or so?) these "88" crates were very common when all of the surplus German 7.9 ammunition was being sold at low prices in the US. I managed to drag a couple of relatively undamaged ones out of the trash at one gun show, the dealer who was selling the 300 round battle packs for $35.00 each had cut the leather hinges on the crates or used a pry bar to break the lids open since he and his wife were having problems unbuckling the small leather billet to open them the right way. (Yes, they were both, at best, halfwits to put it politely.) Anyway, I counted the remnants of 8 crates like the subject of this thread in various trash cans around the floor of the show. The ammo was selling like hotcakes but no one wanted the crates. Too bad, wish I had been able to salvage more of them.
