43/44 asw "s" block

Kind of a neat patina on this one. Had the annoying crayon on it when I got it. What's the easiest way to remove that stuff? Inclined to leave it if there's any chance in harming the finish in trying to get it back out.

Steam cleaner will blow it out..
..

Or you might try using a rag dipped in gasoline. Just don't do it in the house.

Nice bayonet! Interesting that these are seen in only the Q thru V serial blocks. Thought to be 1943 reject bayonets that were later mated with 1944 scabbards and then numbered to match.
Here's one in the "u" block. Not sure why, but most of these that I've seen show little use and are in pretty good condition...

I agree, Denny. Probably rejected '43 production blades being used up very late in '44, though I thought they showed up ealier than the Q block. I want to say I've seen O and P blocks, but I could be wrong...

Since the codes are "mismatched", you can sometimes snag these cheap on ebay when they show up. I missed a mint condition example that sold for a measly $175.

You could certainly be right Ryan. I haven't personally seen or heard of anything earlier than Q block, but anytime I make a positive statement in this nutso collecting, something comes along with a different slant. Thanks for sharing...

Here's mine from the "t" block.

OK, so now we've seen 43/44 asw's in the "s", "t" & "u" serial blocks...
Anyone have one in another block? If you don't have pics, that's OK; report it anyway.
Thanks

The bayonets are of middle 1944 production, there is believed the stamp 44asw was broken and prior send a new stamp die the older was used. So the WaA519 single proof speaks for it. As majority of them were found in matching and depot condition, i believe it must be some depot find of US army, the majority of samples are in USA.

Thanks Andy....

Still looking for others in serial blocks other than "s", "t" or "u". Anyone?

Denny et al,

The enigmatic 43/44 asw are observed in the o through w production blocks. Examples with can scabbards (some ground, some not; all overstamped) which are serial numbered, maker marked, and proofed by E.u.F Hörster are found sporadically in the s, t, u, and v blocks. Hope this helps ......
