lots of the regular players bidding. I guess hattrick gave up on guessing the reserve.. Sometimes rarity doesnt always trump whats hot right now. Despite what some may think this stuff has its ups and downs.
Plus xmas time isnt always the best time to sell...All these factors came together for a lack luster result.
 
Yep, it's funny how things go like that. I buy what I'm interested in when I think the price is reasonable. Sometimes the "market" is interested in the same things, sometimes it isn't. I have Carcanos to prove that ;) For me 2012 was a great year for buying some outstanding items at good prices. With many people focused on buying "assault rifles" and their accessories 2013 will be a good buying year I predict.

I were a 14 y.o. German, and that was issued to me, I would use it till I could pick up an out of action fellow soldier's rifle. With so many around me with a better firearm, I would be waiting for a chance to upgrade. It may function better than it looks like it would but with a firearm it is kinda like golf clubs, if it looks good you play better and have more confidence. With somebody shooting at me confidence would come in handy.

Two questions about these VK98's

Has there ever been a VK98 found chambered in 7.92 x 33 mm?

Was there ever a model with some kind of separate ammo storage in the stock?
 
The finish looks a bit odd in places especially on the receiver. Has this been refinished or is that just how these are?

I thought the same thing along with others.. There isnt signs of pitting so I see no need to clean the rust away ? The receiver shouldnt really differ from a bnz45 k98.. This one does have the odd barrel. Not the standard k98 barrel..The one I owned had a fat k98 stock and k98 barrel. It was the early type. This one being the later style..

See my rifle that is pick stickied here. I think Ham is right about people being distracted with the assault stuff. This is a text book rifle. I have owned several of these and the cut down ones IMHO are not as cool as these slab stocked guns...If I had some disposable income I would be all over this one.
 
I looked at this one, and it's hard to tell from pics if the finish is good. I see a lot about it that I like though. The odd receiver metal finishing is not typical, and not like others I have seen, but everything about it just looks right otherwise. I'd imagine an in hand inspection would be required to be 100% comfortable with it, but he surely put enough photos on there to make a buying decision. To me though, the price seems right in line. A few years ago there were 2-3 of these at the SOS in Louisville all priced near the final bid. I don't think I would pay more than that for one myself, but I'm a cheapskate.:thumbsup:

Quite on topic. The "kurz variant" depicted in Backbone is a fantasy piece. There is no evidence supporting the existence of jackalope of the kriegsmodells. Many of us, me included, back in the day did not question the kurz fantasy in BOTW. Glad you raised the issue.

Agree about the finish..it looks dry to me with fingerprints all over it. A good wipe down would help.
