bmj HT scope opinions

Posting for a friend to get opinions. Have been told that the scope SN is too low to be originally in a HT mount, but may be wartime recycled. Looking for opinions on whether that is likely and how this affects value as opposed to a later scope that is obviously meant for HT mount. Thanks

This is a interesting set. It is an early scope and it could be a number of possibilities. This could be an early high turret transition scope/rings. Scopes were not used in numerical order. The rear ring has a solid stop pin like low turrets but the lever is staked in place like a high turret. And obviously the front ring is high turret. It is also possible that the rear foot is a reproduction. Is there a number on the bottom? I can't see one. Also, is there a RW stamp on the bottom of the front ring?

As for value, if everything is original (which better pictures would determine) then I think this is would be valued the same as all other scope/ring sets. The early scope does not hurt the value in my opinion. Then again, I am not a scope collector. I am a sniper rifle collector. So someone like Dave or Brian could better comment on value. I am curious to learn exactly what it is.

I thought this scope was interesting as well. I think the scope and rings is OK. I held it hand at the Max Show. The scope serial is early for a BMJ High Turret on my Scope serial list. I think it was maybe a recycled Low Turret BMJ Scope. That does not bother me personally, but if you are not collecting scopes and only going to have one then maybe it would bother you. Just my opinion.

Edit: I think the hit in value is a small one probably. If two BMJ scopes were available for the same price then I would pick the one that fell in my BMJ High Turret Scope serial range and lesson my risk. I have bought a couple of scopes with recycled parts and I bought them at a lower price than retail. I have been collecting scope serials for 10 years. I know there are others with more data than me. I have ask a couple of collector friends about this scope and they also said the serial was low for a High Turret BMJ. Is it possible that the Germans used this scope out of order? Maybe, but it is not normal occurrence to be this far away from the serial range.

Thanks for the extra pictures. I think it is all original.

It could be a recycled scope. However, it could also be an early High Turret scope set. I am leaning towards this. Here are pictures of two Low Turrets, both are late examples right at the update to the high turret. The serial numbers are earlier then the OP's.

Hello Matt. Thanks for the additional scope data. I did have scope serial 66903 already and it is a recycled legit Low Turret Scope. That scope is in the BYF Low Turret section of volume 2. That I Block Scope on the matching rifle is new and very nice. Both of those scopes you posted fall firmly in the Low Turret serial range. The High Turret Scope in the original post also falls in the middle of my Low Turret serial range. That is why I think it is possibly recycled. My earliest BMJ High Turret Scope is 70XXX. This scope from OP would be unusually early and on the fringe of what is normally seen. Just and oddity that requires an explanation. Never say never. However, I think the scope is legit and recycled. Best regards and thanks for posting as well as sharing the additional scope pics.

Herc and Darnell,
Nate and I have been batting this one around and it looks all good to me.
It’s an interesting piece and could be a match for Nates HT. I like it and thank you for the comments.
If you guys want more specific pics happy
To vet this here .

I think it is a neat scope. Just an oddity in the sense of normal serial numbering of currently known High Turret BMJ Scopes. I ask a couple of friends with deeper lists than mine and they felt the same. Maybe I’m wrong. I do think scope is legit. Just maybe recycled. Not a bad scope at all.
