I have had this one for awhile and decided to look again and do some better pics. I find this one pretty interesting with these features....
  • Acceptance pattern is like a '43
  • Milled TG, FP, & TD disc
  • Numbered bolt release & extractor
  • E/135 bolt... less common in my experience
  • Handguard has tiny 'C10' popped into it (pretty small)
  • Two digit sn on the rear band
  • Rear band needed to be accepted for some reason E/135 upside down
Is that indeed C10 in the Handguard and what's the significance?

Byf 44 no serial range, just a bit higher than yours Bob.

Have had this one forever it seems. Bolt m/m and also the T/g and f/p it seems as they were on the rifle when I bought it and they are unserialed and they should have serial numbers. This one has schrapnel damage on the right side butt near the e/135 proof as well as more extensive damage in the band/bandspring area and the topside of the handguard. This one seems to have all the same things as yours Bob though not near as nice. This one saw some serious action toward the end of the war it seems. Oddly enough it came with an FN bolt with the e/140 and MI on the rear lug. Fitting enough to be mated with this byf 44. Schrapnel is very deep into the handguard, upon removal you can see the metal. One photo of the exterior near the upper band you can see a fleck of steel glinting there. Great bore and condition otherwise... just poor finish. On the wrist of mine there is a "tiny" e/135 above and to the left of the larger e/135. Never had noticed but mine has the tiny little C10 mark on the handguard as well. ohh.. and I admit.. it was me... I put that nasty "enhancement" white crayon stuff on it all those years ago but wish I had not.

More..

Just more shots of the schrapel damage. You can almost see the damage is all around except the places where the shooters hands would have been.. almost like he would have been aiming when he got peppered.

I'm thinking that the damage on this stock is from two separate incidents as the incoming shrapnel is from different directions i.e. top of handguard and front of stock above band spring. Also, the band spring is not the one that was on the rifle when he got peppered.
Very nice and interesting rifles - both of them. Thanks for sharing
Bob

Correct on the bandspring. I removed it when I bought the rifle.. it was/is nearly severed in two so I put it in a baggie for safe keeping and added an unmarked milled. The one that was damaged was also a milled type bandspring so I replaced it with a like spring. Also, I would not put a lot of faith in the "different directions" of the damage meaning not all at one time. Still carrying Schrapnel from Beirut as a young Marine and it entered from all kinds of angles and directions from one RPG blast.

Was that because it was their first time going to five digits?

Those bolts looks odd with all parts five digits..

..

They do look funny with the fifth digit. Actually not Mauser's first experience as they used up to five with the Portuguese contract rifles.

Mine is very close 24592. m/m in matching cut-down stock😢. I gave it a donor stock.

Nice rifles

I also have no letter Byf 44 block. The rifle is in absolutely original condition, barrel factory condition. Leaving the German army in our territory. Since the war in storage and well conserved, registered on the weapons amnesty. Excuse for google translator, my English is bad.

Something few photos.

Appears that Mow's example has an unnumbered TG and floor plate, which I would expect to be numbered from the factory for a byf 44 no letter.....
