V.Chr.Schilling Suhl 1917 Gew.98 to K98k Conversion

Ive been MIA for awhile but I picked this up a few months ago and wanted to share it. Its a 1917 V.Chr.Schilling Suhl Gew.98 that has been converted to K98k configuration. The original barrel was kept and shortened. The stock is an armorers replacement and is 'C' marked on the heel and E/18 marked in the barrel channel. Recoil lug and bayonet lug are imperial marked. A non matching walnut handguard was reused. No depot proofs anywhere on the action or wood. The rear band and bandspring are unmarked. Almost all the rear sight components are P74 save for the WaA63 spring. It came with a nice L&F marked sling and 'jxn 1943' marked keeper too.

Unfortunately the bolt does not match. Bolt looks to be out of a bnz 44?

Intersting notes:

-The cleaning rod nut, is simply a nut that has been threaded and was placed inside the cleaning rod nut hole.
-The stock was not drilled for the bayonet lug pin.
-The recycled walnut handguard has a metal ring added to the lip for reinforcement.
-The stock was not relieved for the early type receiver tang, causing the rear of the action to stinkbug in the stock.

With all the nice work of converting the action and parks to K98k specs, you would think whoever did the stock work would've paid more attention to detail?

The stock is not serialed at all. But there is red pencil writing forward of the lower band in the stock channel. I cant make it out so I don't know if its a SN or not.

Very interesting Rifle . I look forward to the experts opinions on this one . I have wanted a Period Original all matching Gew98 Reworked to K98 specifications like this for a long time. I believe my quest will be a long one . Hoping for You that this one turns to be correct . Best regards

Neat, but stock would have been serial numbered to match originally. With the unfinished state I suspect the stock is a later addition, looks like one of the unused armorer stocks.

Conversion

Likely a stock completed date stamped under the buttplate.
Would be interested to see if there and how late.

great rifle.. Looks as though the sling was recently removed. Also really good evidence that this stocks were stained fully assembled with slings applied. A theory of mine for quite some time.. A nice s/42 armorer bolt would fir nice in this one..

Are you thinking it was added wartime or post war?

Were there a bunch of these armorer stocks somewhere?

Ill check for a date stamp under the buttplate and snap pics of the red pencil writing.

I really feel like this one is period correct - later war imo.

I agree an armouers bolt would be perfect for this one.

I popped the buttplate off tonight and found that the buttplate was inkstamped 'jvd'

The stock was marked 'Br' deep and crisp. With a date of '3 28 44'

Without being numbered I'm not sure you could ever know for sure if it's period, no? There were a number of unused armorers stocks available after the war, I've owned this exact stock in unfinished state one an s/147 1936 that was completely matched metal.

It fits the rifle well, who knows when it was put on like others have said. Could have been last week or 75 years ago. In any case, that stock is worth some coin!

Well, original to the re-work stock or not, its a really cool piece, and a great addition to a collection, I love the 98k modified Gew's you just don't see that many.

The only RC I ever kick myself for not buying was a 98k converted Gew...

I'd be happy to own it!

Just getting into k98's and all the different markings, proofs and fonts...was going to ask why your great conversion has the same font on the barrel has the receiver..then dumb me I just realized...its the same barrel, just cut down. So would it be safe to assume that new k98 barrels fitted to the Gew receiver would have a different font to Gew receiver, and that font would be dependent on where the refit took place.
