Early moded Vz24

Unfortunately bubba got to this one first, but I figure it’s still of interest for data and such. Another local find, I guess this area is rich in modded Vz’s ha. I thought it was a Vz23 at first but apparently R prefix is late in 1924 Vz24 production, please correct me if I’m wrong. For what’s left of it, it has the tale tell German signs, filled swivels, fully serialed bottom metal etc. I’ll pop it apart and get the rest of the scoop. Pretty awesome to think about the history in this early one! Can someone help with the unit ID please? Interestingly the bolt is a dou 98k bolt, which is interesting in its own right, I’ll get to that later when I take it apart. Well it’s hacked on and a bolt m/m but the price was right and it was surely interesting enough to take home today for a shooter or whatever it becomes.

I would agree. Interesting rifle but sad about the furniture. I'd also like to see the bolt details when you get a chance.

HM, I’ll start a new thread over in 98k for the bolt, it’s got enough interesting Mauser nerdery to warrant a thread. Popped the Vz apart and there aren’t any german proofs like I was hoping but here are the details.

Interesting unit stamp. Question nr.1 is the buttstock still marked R1535 for early Vz.24 as this unit is not reported in the early years, could be marked post 1928, as some smaller units raised.
Possible its School, Depot or something else Mashine Battalion, of small numbers, evidently existed minimum 2 units. i will ask my czech friends. b.r.Andy
I dont have a early Vz24 but the serialing in butt fuller is not typical for CS production.

So my good pal Clay sold me this, along with a replacement stock and various small parts...I will have a handguard, cleaning rod and front sight protector on the way from Liberty Tree to complete it, but here are the new pics...

The parts that are numbered...receiver, barrel, rear sight leaf, trigger guard, floorplate, ejector box. I assume Clay was correct in that all the extra s/n's were added during German mods?

The old stock was numbered crosswise in the channel forward of the receiver, and on the left butt side to match, shame some bubba chopped it, Pics included. Other visible mod of course is the replace wrist swivel with a wood plug.

He even dug me up a VZ-24 bolt to go in it...

I took out the marked disc, and put it in the replacement stock....I will get pics of the rifle overall, but am waiting for the last of the parts to do that.

Andy, any info you might be able to dig up on the unit on the disc would be most appreciated.

I dig the "crest", and think its cool that it is a 1924 production VZ-24...will go nice with the Romanina German mod, and my G-24(t)....

As can be seen here, and in Clay's pics, some bubba, probably same one who chopped the stock scratched up the receiver to pretty good...tried to minimize it, but still pretty bad, but oh, well, you work with what you got...

Well, the handguard, front sight protector and cleaning rod came in, so I got the VZ together...

Although don't buy a "VZ-24 rod" from Liberty Tree, they are full of crap, it doesn't fit, way too thick, won't fit the hole....

Came out decent, not near as nice as the one Dave just posted, but still a neat piece.

Looks good all together, still would love to get any info on the marking disc that might be dug up...

That's odd about the rod! I bought one for my Vz.23 conversion and it fit fine!

I am going to try a rod from one of my other VZ's...maybe the bayo lug on this stock is a 98k lug, but for sure the one they sent will not fit...length is right, but it ain't goin' in that hole....

Possibly! Or they sent you the wrong rod!

Looks a lot better than that bubba job! HG is a great match to the stock too! Interesting about the rod, is there just crap in the rod hole maybe? Or is it just not threading in the nut?

Nope, must have a 98k bayo lug, or was there a period of VZ production that had small holes?

I pulled the rod from the Romanian...too big, so the rod sent is correct, just won't fit this bayo lug, definitely a small diameter hole...weird...

But yeah, sure does look etter, and I lucked out with the handguard, like you said, good match...

ETA We could always chuck it in a lathe, and turn it down a little, then reblue....

Better luck opening the hole in the bayonet lug....

Post a picture of the markings on the lug and dia of the lug hole?

I also purchased a VZ24 cleaning rod from Liberty Tree and it did not fit my German Modified rifle, too big.

Maybe the rods are for something else actually. Vz24 bayonet lugs are dimensionally different than 98k by some small dimensions. I think roughly .012 in the actual barrel opening etc if I remember right.

The cleaning rod that came with my 1926 VZ-24 is 14.75" long (including threads) and is ~0.25" thick thread side. The hole on the VZ-24 lug is 1/4". The hole on my 1937 S/42 is 3/16".

Yeah, you are right there, Flynaked will have the proper drill bits...there are no markings whatsoever on the lug...not even a CZ mark...the 12" 98k rod slides in fine but is 2" or so short of course, neither VZ rod I have will fit, bot are too big. And I am not talking it will slide in but is real tight...the diameter is a bit large, too large to even slide in...like I said, its almost like its actually a 98k lug...

I am way down in Cotulla for the week, so I can't measure anything exactly till I get back home....
