PEM Top Mount (Factory #349)

This is an excellent example of an un-issued PEM Top Mount scope/mount/base combo made at Factory #349 - GOMZ Leningrad in 1943.

From my readings, generally only 1942 dated scopes (indicated by the first two numbers in the scope serial number) were ever mated to rifles. These scopes/mount combos were a stop gap solution during the siege of Leningrad, assembled with left over and stop gap parts. By the time 1943 rolled around the situation had improved and the Soviets had a better source of PU scopes/mounts. As a result most of the GOMZ 1943 dated scope/mounts are found in un-issued condition.

Note specifically how the mounts are made from welded steel and have a very rough finish when compared to my 1936 PE Top Mount. These scope/mount combo's are also mated with a green/grey scope cover which are unique to these examples. Interesting how close my mount is to the one depicted in the reference book.

Nice example. Once the siege was partially broken in January 1943, factory snipers could be delivered in sufficient quantities, so there was no further need for these.

That is correct!!

Very nice. Looks like the one I posted earlier on the top mount thread. My scope is about 100 serial numbers later, one of the last PEMs.

The other mount I posted without a scope was apparently issued and numbered to a rifle. How they used these is baffling as the quality is so low.

Is your base an original. If so, detailed pics would be appreciated. Bases are the hardest thing to find. Mine came with a dug base, from Russia with love.
