this is my lonely gew98. I have owned many others but this was my keeper. I purchased it along with two other rifle from the great war. One being a depot reworked 1916 spandau and the other a belgian 89 converted to 8mm by the germans. Both of the gews had the firing pins snipped the 89 didnt as I guess they couldnt figure how to get the bolt apart. Its not easy.
Anyway this has one of the nicest stocks Ive had on a gew98 and its proofed nicely. Even the h.g. is crown proofed and clear. The small locking screws are proofed. Some strawing is still present on some parts. I'd say the rifle was used very little. Then a vfw war gift rifle. I cant remember the actual program name for giving out these war trophys..

I agree, this is an exceptional rifle, - to get Mike out of his lurking slumber, you know it must be exceptional! Few have collections more impressive.

I do not know whether the distribution carried a name, however the legislations that authorized the distribution to the various states, based upon the states contribution to the war, carried the title "Distribution of War Devices and Trophies".

Back then Congress worked as well as it does today- quite well, contrary to what you hear in the news... Congress isn't designed to agree on things just to move things along. The bigger and more profound the legislation the more debate and rancor should be expected.

Personally I think too much compromise occurs- especially on the "conservative" side.

Anyway, this material was distributed to the states, based upon that states contribution to the war (men in service), and it was doled out to the public according to the various states desires. Usually to VFW, givernment buildings, and in some cases sold, - I once saw an advertisement for a public sale from Massachusetts, selling this stuff off.

This legislation was held up over money for years- the cost of distribution. Back then Congress wasn't "quite" as carefree with the publics funds. FDR would change this tendency.
