Hello, im very sorry if this is not the right place for this, as I am a very new member. But I wanted to know if $500 for this rifle is a good deal.

I was offered this for $500.00. It's from 1941, claimed to be a WWII K98 8mm Mauser. The front barrel band isn't matching, not the original sling. The bore has slight discoloration. What do you guys think? Thanks so much!

It’s Russian captured (RC), note the refinished metal and the x marking on the top of the ring. Stocks been sanded to heck, but looks like a good shooter for a new guy IMO. Usually the Ruski’s peened out the swaztikas on the proof marks but they look to be intact which you do see time to time with RC’s. As long as the bore is good I’d say a fair deal for sure.

If you search gunbroker, you likely will find RC examples that have sold for more ... like 6-800. I will let you do the math, and then factor in your wants/desires...

I would think 500 is fair. It has very little collector value being a RC but I bet it’ll be a decent shooter. 1941 is a good year as production was scaled back with most going to the eastern front did not survive. If it’s you’re first K98k and you want to shoot it, I’d probably jump on it. Even the Yugoslav reworks are fetching 5 bills now.

Hi SpeedDemon,

Just a heads up that I am 99% sure I saw that exact rifle on Gunbroker a few weeks ago that sold (not sure if I can post expired auction links but you can find it if you search completed auction). Be cautious unless you know/trust the seller.

It is a WWll K98k that was taken by Russia during or after the war, and rebuilt/ refinished by them after the war, hence the term, "RC" for Russian capture. On the plus side, someone added a reproduction sling, cleaning rod, and sight hood. As others have already said, these seldom sell for less than $600. So I would say you are getting a good deal.

And welcome to the forum.

Agreed. For $500 you did OK. Like others suggested $600-700 going price often for an R/C these days.

Good price if you are looking for a shooter or just want to have a 98. We all have to start somewhere. Good luck and let us know what you decide. Welcome to the collecting world and the board

Yes ended auctions are fine as are legit turd callouts. If you have the link share it here and we can determine if this is that same rifle. FWIW that scam happens more and more frequently, especially on the smaller gun selling venues.

For the OPs question I agree with the consensus that 500 for that item is OK in this current market. It's not the most handsome RC out there but it's no where near the worst I've seen.

Ok thanks. So this has been caught already many times. Scamming scumbag take snips of an ended auction then offers it for sale at a very attractive price on lesser gun sale sites. Always some nonsense involved in completing the transaction which 'should' be the red flag. Either that or the 'winner' of this decided having it in his procession for a week was just too much to take and is offering it for $405 less than he just paid?

Thats a big thing going around right now stay off of Armslist for a while. They are copying ended auctions from gunbroker. I had the same thing happen to me almost with a Gewehr 98, but i knew i saw it somewhere else.

This type of garbage is exactly why it's so dangerous getting into the K98k realm for new collectors. I was almost been scammed myself when looking to pick up my first 98k a few weeks ago, but luckily common sense prevailed and I allowed myself to get outbid on the two GB auctions that were later posted on this forum as turds.

So thankful I found this forum, and unless I can acquire in person all my German rifle purchases will be from the Trader Board here.

A good tool for checking these is to copy and paste the description into your search engine, if it's ripped from a GunBroker ad then that ad will pop up containing the description found on Armslist (often it's not the whole GB description but a snippet). Also use Google or, my personal favorite, Tineye reverse image search to check if the images appear elsewhere. They might be ripped from GB or from very old trader posts on other collector forms. If it's the latter, it would be nearly impossible to detect without doing a reverse-image search.

Definitely a great price I recently bought one in the $700 range. it really just depends on the condition and if it still has markings.
