The Mauser factory used the "42" and "S/42" codes on parts meant for armorers kits until the byf code was introduced. Its difficult if you haven't seen one before, you could easily take the 42 as a serial, but serial numbering is a different font than the maker mark. Its one reason they switched to the 3 letter code system.
