Questions about a Sauer 1944 block f

Hi everyone,

I've seen a ce 44 block f that is out of the woodwork.
I've checked Vol II and the block d in the pic sticky: https://www.k98kforum.com/threads/ce44.33464/, however I have still some questions.
1) the front band is closed milled and unnumbered, with an "l" or a "1" (Astrawerke ?)
2) the rear band is stamped and unnumbered
3) the barrel code is "ce cr" : seems to match the table on page 344.
4) Triggerguard is stamped with an e/135 and serialized

What do you think about 1) and 2) ?

Thanks!

That's got to be a rare find. Best I ever had was a bcd4 finished by Sauer and it had close milled/milled w/sn's.

i think its real... curious to see what the others think. Would you be able to post pictures of the cartouches on the stock?

Odd FP for sure but doesn’t look wrong. Stock is a Menzel, tons of Astrawerke parts the later Sauer assembly goes on.

Thanks Clay, better views of the floorplate below, why do you find it odd ?
I know about the bands which shall be numbered, and wanted to check if somebody here has ever seen oddballs with unnumbered bands.

Looks like a cool rifle. I’ve always followed the convention that if the tg and floorplate are numbered, so are the bands. There may be an exception for SS. My CE 44 is an o block and the bands are numbered.

By FP I think he means fireproof. Looks like someone accidentally stamped it on the barrel collar (or shoulder or whatever you want to call it). Is there a second stamp on the barrel itself? Looks like it was restamped in the correct spot.

Bands should be numbered in all cases throughout JPS production (RB along bottom; and SRB is far more common than milled, but milled do show up often enough in 1944, though in my trends the f-block lacks an examples, but certainly this is not a rule as surrounding blocks have them...)

TG-FP should be serialed in this range, STG are common but in no confirmed case has a SFP (stamped floorplate) been seen on a JPS (also serialing the TG stops in the ce/44 i-block, this block both should be serialed.)

Not sure I have seen fp on a barrel shoulder like this, not in trends anyway, but I could have overlooked this abnormality... better picture might add some clarity to its purpose, ce-cr is a proper barrel code for this range.

Thanks Paul, is there such thing as an unnumbered Astrawerke front band ? If so, could armorers have that in their kits ?
@RyanE , yes, a fireproof is where it should be on the barrel.
The sling is also in good condition (leather below the buckle) and looks like it stayed with the rifle

Not always but very often times if you see any kind of tampering that is reason to look for, or suspect more. The front action screw is a replacement for instance, it is not a 98k part.

@flynaked , @Hambone, well spotted gents. I will try to get closer pics of both sides of the front band and two pics of top and bottom of the rear band.
Yes, the head of the screw looks like it is rounded, not flat like it should be.

Yugo screw swapped out for a more desirable K98k front action screw. They should have at least knocked it flat with a file and polished it. I've used those on my field guns to spare the good screws. It could be a resurrected sporter GO, such that the stuff in back is all original, but the stock was cut down and the bands lost. It was put in a new stock and new "unnumbered" bands added. The stock and handguard on the original were numbered internally.
