7-57 Mauser G33/40

Spitfire

I came across this rifle recently but would love to get some info and possibly history on it. Any help would be great. I’ve taken pics of all the markings I can find on the gun so hopefully those will show enough info.
Also, can i shoot 7mm through this or do I need to get 7-57 ammo specifically. Looking at original g33/40 rifles this one looks like it’s been completely changed and customized but I’m sure it still has some great history.
Thanks for any help you can offer.

G33/40 actions were prized by Bubba (and very high quality gunsmiths) for their lightweight action compared to a standard Mauser 98. The scope mount is covering up the year marking on top of the receiver.
No great history unfortunately besides a mountain troop carbine turned into a sporter. Nice stock though.

You need to shoot 7x57 aka 7mm Mauser through that. Though it may be a shame these days, in the days of cheap surplus Mausers this was the most highly coveted action to use to build a sporter. Whoever built the gun did a beautiful job.

I recall reading articles in my dad's American Rifleman magazine in the early 60's on how to convert your "war trophy mauser" into a 1st class sporting rifle. This looks like one that was done properly with quality work (i.e. Pre Bubba) Collectability aside many of these and K98's were beautifully done.

Shame it was sportered, but at least not your typical bubba job. Very nice work on that one, I'd like to own it!

7x57 and 7mm mauser are the same thing. I dont mean they are so similar it doesn't matter, I mean they are 100% the exact same thing. You are correct in your assumption that it isnt original any longer. Its a high quality sporter however, and will retain some value because of it. Some sporter jobs are so bad that the rifles are barely worth the sum of there components. Enjoy the rifle for what it is, 7mm is a great caliber, and thats a damn good action for it.
