PTR44 Semi-Auto MP44

Ok figured out what the problem was with the front sight. I mail the wrong one to my SOT. It was a late war model. I'm ordering the one from DK and it should be correct. I'm having 7 builds of different MP44s and sometimes things get mixed up. On the bolt my SOT is going to mill a bit off on the ears to get a better fit. It will make the bolt closer to the original bolt dimension and hook up better with the ears on the original op. rod.

Not saying that is what happened here, but until I really get into this I really don't know for sure. In any case, it is what it is at this point and I'll just have to make it work.

One of the biggest problem with original MP44, is that there is so much differences on them. We have 18 original ones, and they are all different. Even when made in the same factory, there are differences. So when you make new parts for them, witch one do you replicate? We tried to find a middle ground with our parts, Recon used another 44 to replicate so there will be some differences. D

Sounds like the AK world. I didn't realize that even from the same factory there were differences.
 
Let me say Tors parts are really good. I've really had no problems with them. The bolt being milled a bit on the ears is a minor issue. Milling it is better than trying to add material any day. The with is of the ears are exactly the same as the original.
 
I had to make my own barrel so I didn't have problems with the variances in diameters. All I did was measure the ID of the barrel parts and add a bit to them and then turn the barrel to that dimension. All the parts got pressed on and fit just nice with only a moderate bit of force needed to press them on.
That's one advantage of having to make your own parts. If you have the tools to do it that is.
The barrel is really easy to make. It just takes time with an old SB 405 lathe.
Any good gunsmith or machinist can make one of those barrels. As long as he has the ID of the barrel socket in the trunnion and the ID's of the gas block and front sight.
If it were me I'd make those areas of the barrel at those dimensions as big as the greatest diameter you have found on original barrels. Then a guy could reduce them to fit his parts. A file and some wet/dry and lots of elbow grease would get you to your dimensions. I have had to do that before. Bigger is usually better than too small. As we all know it's easier to remove metal than add it. Put a note in with the barrel indicating the process needed.
If the dimension is close, knurling or a center punch can tighten up the diameter.
The 6.5 Grendel barrel I bought from a guy over at AK files was a bit oversize. So I made it to fit.
BTW Dingo, tell your guys to put the front sight blade in the right way. Mine was in backwards.
And now it's time for my assault on a nest of yellow jackets in the eaves of house.
 
I spoke with Jerry from Recon Ordnance over the phone last week, He stated he has MP44 barrels in stock and they are $300. So if you are looking to purchase one just call him before getting in a bidding war on gunbroker. Which I should have done before getting the one on gunbroker, He was surprised the one I won had not been bid up beyond the starting price.

Well I for one didn't bid when I knew someone was trying to get one for a kit. Doesn't make a lot of sense to me but a lot of things involving firearms haven't 'made sense' in a few years.
 
Well heavy_mech I can appreciate that. hopefully this will save another member here some money in avoiding GB fees, state revenue,burnt up bank account etc.
I Hope to see everyone else's finished products in the future here. And Thanks to Trenches for putting himself out there with his progress on the kit build.

I wish I knew. I would have just called him. I'm the current high bidder.
 
No problem. I'm working on the bolt now. More to come as I get more work done on it.
I did try something. Stuck the unfinished bolt in up to the ejector. Then shined a light into the ejection port. Looked down the barrel. From what I could see, the firing pin hole is dead center with the bore. That made me happy.
Sorry guys but I'm happy I didn't have to bid on a barrel. More for you guys.
 
Do any of you guys reload your own 8x33? I was going to grab some of that ppu from SG ammo but looks like its all gone. I found a die set but am struggling to locate a .323" bullet mold that isn't too heavy.
 
I do. Or should I say I will. I have the dies, brass, and the correct bullet that I bought from Grafs. I made up some dummy rounds to check feeding and some other things. Finding the bullet was almost impossible. Luckily I checked Grafs again and they had the PPU bullet. But there was a limit of 2 bags of them.
And I have little stock pile of PPU ammo.
It might be possible to use a hard cast bullet. I think Accurate Molds may have the correct bullet type. The guy makes beautiful molds. I bought one of his for the Spencer that I built. Good price and fast shipping.

Wow, his selection is insane! The price for one 2 cav aluminum mold isn't bad at ~$130. I wish I had more $$ to throw around and try some different designs.

Something like this might work... only 115 grain.

I bought a one cavity mold for the Spencer. 340 gr. bullet. Think it was only $80. His molds are works of art. They cast beautiful bullets too. And you can specify what alloy you use.
I don't think it would be much a problem using cast bullets in the MP-44. The gas port is pretty easy to get to if you have to clean it out. And hard cast bullets don't generally lead the bore.
There is always a way around a road block.
 
Pete casts his bullets for his sturmgewehrs, he puts some form of wax or other type of “lubricant” on them - can’t remember what though.
