How many variances are there in the 98 K reciever

In terms of Mauser model 1898 rifles, there are some differences in the area of the rear receiver bridge, but not major, or they wouldn’t be model 98s. Among K98k rifles, really no variation, as they were a particular sub model of 98s in themselves. ( a fairly small number of receivers were made differently to facilitate their conversion into sniper rifles with scope mounts)

Thanks mate i was just wondering if any of the recievers where the bolt is were actually at a 90 degree angle instead of the multi angle rear sections i have often seen

No, that feature is part of the design of all model 98s, how it works. There may be other bolt action rifles of the era with a right angle cut there, but I bet they’re hard to extract the case. If you’ve seen a Mauser design rifle such as you describe, it wasn’t a model 1898, it was something else.
