Hey all,

New guy here. I've loved k98s ever since I could remember. I finally got my gun license (Canadian) and picked up a k98. Wanted to know what y'all thought about it, and maybe give me your opinion on the estimated worth.

I honestly think it's just a pieced together shooter but maybe someone with more knowledge could help me out.

Also if you have any questions/would like more pictures of something I missed let me know.

Thank you!

It is a pieced together shooter but it looks really nice. It doesn’t really matter where you got it imo, it’s your business. Some people don’t like to share that much info and say things like that.

Thank you, I appreciate it.
Not sure why we're playing 20 questions in this thread. I did some digging on the stickies and yeah you're right its a mismatched shooter. Again, thanks for your response.

I was just confused why you would want a value if you just bought it.

I'm not sure what exactly is confusing about that? I'm a newbie and thought I'd ask people with much more knowledge than me what they thought. Seems like pretty common human curiosity.
I probably got rinsed but I'm still very happy with the rifle. If you have an opinion on the gun feel free to share, I enjoy learning. Thanks.

Fully prepared to take the L on this one. You just bought something, assuming you shopped around, you decide that item is the one. What you paid is the value. It's pretty simple. That scenario cuts out any market noise, the high and low ends equalize in the middle.

I'm not trying to give you the gears or bust your balls. It's not a matching rifle (that's very apparent) and any unique features only bring in a couples 100 tops, granted if you can find someone who cares for those features.

1,800 is my price. Maybe a bit more, not up to date with prices.

Thank you I sincerely appreciate the response. I suppose I should have been more forthcoming with the post but it's always a little embarrassing to get taken for a ride, which I kind of deserved anyway considering I did very little due diligence. Shopped around a little, for sure, but the market in Canada for these is quite miniscule.

You're right in saying what I paid is the value, although that's the value to me and not the general market; which is what I was most curious about. It's just nice to shed a little light on those questions you have in the back of your mind if you know what I mean. I'm still happy with the rifle, holding a k98 I've wanted since I was a kid is a priceless feeling anyhow.

Again, thank you for the response. No hard feelings at all. Found a lot of really cool things to study on these forums. Next time I'll be better prepared :)

Why? Because you showed up with a gun that looks like it was just bought, lied about it’s origin, and are trying to pump the forum for information.

This is generally frowned upon, as most such people either:
1- hear what they want to hear and leave; or
2- get mad about what they hear and then leave.

Given that reality - then instantly copping an attitude when caught in a lie - means that this exchange isn’t exactly looking promising.

If you decide to stay around - which I always hope new people do- welcome to the crew.

I think it's perfectly reasonable to be skittish about where and how rifles are acquired, and to be quite honest should be up to the discretion of the poster. I got caught in a lie but I really don't care as I was just trying to respond politely rather than telling people to kick rocks on my first thread here.

If it is generally frowned upon to do those two things you listed that's perfectly understandable. However if you are worried about people leaving your forum and not contributing further then maybe they shouldn't be instantly interrogated about information that have absolutely ZERO bearing on the actual rifle being posted and discussed.

To be quite frank the treatment I received and apparently are continuing to receive from you even after coming to amends with other posters in this thread would make any sane human walk away and not return.

Fear not, I won't be running. I've been spending quite a lot of time since arriving here soaking in a ton of information. Thanks to all the contributors whose efforts have made said information freely available.

Like I said, I hope you stay. We get jaded here sometimes.

BNZ is my favorite maker, for what that’s worth. They seem to have the most variety in terms of receiver ring marking.

After reading a few threads on bnz and their influence they're starting to grow on me a little. Totally not biased or anything :) I was actually just admiring the one posted in this thread: https://www.k98kforum.com/threads/walnut-km-bnz41.30343/ what an absolute stunner. Also saw another thread about bnz supplying SS and ordered a book recommended by mrfarb "Infiltration" by Albert Speer.

I noticed the rifle I posted had a lot of receiver ring markings, how do you know if they're authentic or not? I looked at the fake stamp library but now I'm even more confused than I was before

Lol I’ve been here for 5 years and still am as confused as when I got here. No question is a dumb question and no one will here will think any less of you for asking, we all had to start from some point—except for a few guys that somehow seem to have all this knowledge hard coded into their DNA.

I say this a lot to new members who come here only to learn they purchased something that isn’t what they thought. Mausers are a minefield and everyone here has or will get burned eventually on at least one rifle. As someone once told me, “it is not a mistake if you learn from it”. Don’t let this dissuade you from collecting, stick around, read threads ask questions. We are all here because we all share a passion for these rifles and their histories and are always eager to help each other and new collectors.

I get where your coming from, you might have known you’d been burned and yes it can be intimidating coming here. It happens a lot but honesty goes a long way here. Hope you stick around, participate in discussion, look at the picture reference thread and when your ready you can post a WTB ad in the trader section. No one here will let you get burned. You will not find a better place to learn from a better and more knowledgeable bunch of guys.

Just Don’t say I didn’t warn you, once you start you can’t stop.

Steyr is a pretty deep dive as they had a LOT going on. The SS and TK guns are VERY often faked, That said, the wide diversity and later their crude finishes and propensity for errors is quite interesting.

Thank you for your post. It really is very daunting just how much there is to learn about these rifles, lol. I do plan to stick around; I got a shooter but I still need a wall hanger! Hahahaha. It's comforting to know that people here will answer any dumb question I have. I appreciate the welcome.

Where can I read more about these later production crude finishes? That seems like an interesting rabbit hole to get stuck in. Thanks for your post.

Some great examples have been posted and discussed on this website. You can also find them in the picture reference. Then some guy who might know a thing or three has this site and while not Steyr specific has some info on their very late production. http://latewar.com/

For some Steyr specific mania, here's the SS contract serial study. Oh and they had some serious operational challenges/changes going on at the same time.
